OBJECTIVES

 Define rights & bills of right.


 List the types of rights.
 Describe the role of nurse in relation to bills
of right.
 Explain patient’s bills of right in a tertiary
care health facility.
RIGHTS
Definition:
 That which is morally correct, just, or
honorable.

 Human rights are the basic rights and freedoms


that belong to every person in the world, from
birth until death. They apply regardless of
where you are from, what you believe or how
you choose to live your life.
TYPES OF RIGHTS IN ISLAM
 These rights are as follows: (1) The Right to
Life, (2) The Right to Live in Dignity, (3) The
Right to Justice, (4) The Right to Equal
Protection of the Law, (5) The Right of
Choice, (6) The Right of Free Expression, (7)
The Right to Privacy, (8) The Right of
Property, (9) The Right to Basic Necessities
of Life and (10) The Right to Revolt. 
UNIVERSAL HUMAN RIGHTS
 Some examples of human rights include:
 The right to life.
 The right to liberty and freedom.
 The right to the pursuit of happiness.
 The right to live your life free of
discrimination.
 The right to control what happens to your
own body and to make medical decisions for
yourself etc.

 The right to freely exercise your religion and
practice your religious beliefs without fear of
being prosecuted for your beliefs
 The right to be free from prejudice on the
basis of race, gender, national origin, color,
age or sex
 The right to grow old
 The right to a fair trial and due process of
the law
 The right to be free from cruel and unusual
punishment

 The right to freedom of speech
 The right to freely associate with whomever
you like and to join groups of which you'd
like to be a part.
 The right to freedom of thought
 The right to be free from torture
 The right not to be prosecuted from your
thoughts
CONTROVERSIAL HUMAN RIGHTS
 The right to reproductive freedom including
the right to choose abortion
 The right to be free from discrimination on
the basis of sexual orientation, including the
right to marry a person of the same sex
 The right to bear arms and to not have the
government infringe unduly on that right
 The right to regular and affordable health
insurance subsidized or supported by the
government or provided by a single payer
system.
BILLS OF RIGHT
Definition:
 A formal declaration of the legal and civil
rights of the citizens of any state, country,
federation, etc.
ROLE OF NURSE IN RELATION
TO BILLS OF RIGHT
 Nurses have the right to freely and openly
advocate for themselves and their patients,
without fear of retribution. The Code of
Ethics for Nurses (2001) asserts that
the nurse promotes, advocates for and
strives to protect the health, safety,
and rights of the patient, as one of its non-
negotiable tenets.

According to the American Hospital
Association, all patients have the right to:
 Privacy.
 Confidentiality.
 Respect and dignity.
 Select and choose their own doctor(s)
 Fully know about their medical condition and
treatments without any withholding of
information.

 Make autonomous decisions about their
medical care including their right to accept
and reject any treatments
 Complete freedom from abuse and neglect
 Access to emergency services
 Manage and control their finances and
personal property
 Competent and compassionate care

 Religious freedom
 Social freedom
 Accurate bills for the care and services that
are given to the person
 Express their complains and have these
complaints and concerns addressed
PATIENT’S BILLS OF RIGHT IN A TERTIARY CARE
HEALTH FACILITY.
 The charter outlined what every person could
expect when receiving care and described
seven fundamental rights including: access;
safety; respect; partnership; information;
privacy; and giving feedback.

 Its use was embedded in the National Safety


and Quality Health Service (NSQHS) Standards.
