• A badge that read “U Done Good” for a good job
• 10 “U Done Good” can be exchanged for paperweight
• A T-shirt each year but employees can’t wear it due
to strict dress code
 Empty gesture rather than motivation

• A Cadillac Seville (originally the company car)
• A 10,000$ Rolex watch (put in cheap cardboard box)
• 2 months later he pawned the watch
The gifts were distributed wrong way so they no meaning to
him
LOGO Downsides of verbal praise
Praise is best given for specific reasons. It’s an fairly easy and
motivational tool but if overusing, it can:
• Make it meaningless to employees (empty gesture)
• Make employees left their guard down
• Be insulting (praise for trivial or basic things)
• Be annoying (used as a way to avoid dealing with problems).
For example: praising someone for ignoring a bullying co-worker
rather than dealing with the bullying.
• Money talks

It’s not like everybody want the same thing (time off, job sharing,
flexible work hours, money…)
