Energy Cycles: Edwin G. Dumopoy Environmental Science Teacher

The document discusses energy cycles in ecosystems. It describes how energy from the sun enters ecosystems and flows through different trophic levels, with organisms at each level obtaining energy for metabolic processes. Matter also cycles through biotic and abiotic parts of ecosystems via biogeochemical cycles like the water, carbon, and nitrogen cycles. These energy and matter cycles influence weather, climate, and the environment by affecting processes like day/night temperature fluctuations, the greenhouse effect, and convection currents. When organisms use organic matter as an energy source, the matter is returned to the environment as carbon dioxide, water, and minerals, while all energy leaves the ecosystem as heat.

Energy
Capacity o matter to do
work as a result of it
motion or position in
relation to forces acting
on it
5
Cycle of energy
◍ The cycle of energy
is based on the flow
of energy from
different trophic
levels.
6
Cycle of energy
◍ Energy enters the
ecosystem from the
sun and exits after
the organism have
taken as much as
they need. 7
Cycle of energy
◍ Matter cycles
through biotic and
abiotic part of the
biosphere.
◍ Biosphere- portion of
Earth where life exist.
8
Cycle of energy
◍ Matter cycles
through
biogeochemical
cycles.

9
Cycle of energy
◍ Biogeochemical cycles-
refers to the flow of
chemical elements and
compounds between
organism and physical
environment.

10
Biogeochemical cycle
◍ Water cycle
◍ Carbon cycle
◍ Nitrogen cycle
◍ Oxygen cycle
◍ Phosphorus cycle
◍ Sulfur cycle
◍ Etc…….. 11
 How matter and
energy cycles
influence
weather and
climate?.
12
 Weather is the day-to-day
state of the atmosphere, and
 The weather conditions
its short-term variation in prevailing in an area in
minutes to weeks. People general or over a long
generally think of weather as period.
the combination
of temperature, humidity,
precipitation, cloudiness,
visibility, and wind.
13
 Day/ night
temperature is
influence by
solar energy.

14
 Day/ night
temperature is
influence by
solar energy.

15
 Green house
effect is one of
the major
processes of
energy transfers
within the
atmosphere.
16
 The amount of
energy that the
earth receives
from the sun
results the change
in weather or
climatic condition.
17
 The sun causes
convection and
therefore affects
weather and
climate.

18
 How matter and
energy cycles on
environment?

19
 The key difference between
energy flow and matter cycling
is that energy flow shows the
energy transmission from one
trophic level to next trophic
level in food chains while
matter cycling shows the flow
or cycling of elements through
the living and nonliving parts of
ecosystems.
20
 All energy leaves the
ecosystem as heat.
 When organic matter is
used, Matter goes back
into C02 water and
minerals.

21
 In natural systems, both
energy and matter are
conserved within a
system. ... This means
that energy and matter
can change forms but
cannot be created or
destroyed.
22
CONCLUSION

• An ecosystem is a functional unit with energy flowing among

its abiotic components very efficiently.
• Energy flow in an ecosystem is always unidirectional.
• Energy in an ecosystem is never destroyed but it is converted
from one form to another
• Sun is the ultimate source of energy.
• Plants play a vital role in converting the solar energy to the
chemical energy, making the sun’s energy available to the
organisms at higher tropic levels
