Osgood-Schramm
Model of Communication
 Osgood-schramm model – theory that communication is a two-way street,
with a sender and a receiver.
In this model, pay attention to the role of the interpreter. Encoding and
decoding are not automatic processes both go through the filter of the
interpreter.
 Therefore, the message may succeed or fail, based on the interpreter’s
appreciation of the message. There are times when the sender and receiver
may apply different meanings to the same message. And this is termed
“semantic noise” ( Communicative Theories. Org ).
His second model, on the other hand, builds this theory about the
interpreter into the different fields of experience of the sender and the
receiver.
Fields of experience- incorporates what is mutually understood between
the sender and reciever.

Components of Osgood-Schramm

Most communication models have different components that help to identify the
structure of the model. In the Osgood-Schramm model, the components are fairly
simple:

 Sender: This is the person who encodes(converts) and sends the message.

 Message: This is the content being shared between the parties.

 Receiver: This is the person who decodes(interprets) the message.

 Semantic: The backgrounds, beliefs, experiences, and values that influence how the
sender conveys a message and how the receiver interprets it.
Advantage of Osgood-Schramm model of communication

Dynamic model- show how a situation can change

It shows why redundancy is an essential part
There is no separate sender and receiver, sender and receiver is the
same person
Assume communication to be circular in nature
Feedback- central feature

Disadvantage of Osgood-Schramm model of communication

This model does not talk semantic noise and it assume the moment
of encoding and decoding
