Welding Safety

Safe operating practices and procedures are vital in the welding process because the work is hazardous, involving electrically operated plants, working with high temperature -heat & flame with heavy exposure to light and radiation .
More than 90 % of all accidents are avoidable, being caused by human error rather than by mechanical failure / failure due to machinery & plant.
By knowing this measures we can protect ourselves, the job and the equipments.
CLASSIFICATION OF SAFETY PRECAUTIONS

We can classify safety precautions into the following:
1) Personal Safety
2) Job Safety
3) Tools & equipments Safety
Personal Safety

Welding should be done in open

air space as far as possible for
the safety of lungs
Powered Air Purifying Respirator
Use welding goggles or screen for safety of eyes
Use chipping screen or goggles
while chipping off the slag
Never lean too much on the job. Keep at least 1.5 ft distance from the job.
Use welding gloves for safety of
hands.
Use welding Helmet or
Hood for safety of head.
Use apron for safety of body.
Use Welding Mask for safety of lungs
Leather work boots should be worn to prevent the welding slag and sparks from burning the feet.

Never throw electrode bits
on the floor. Collect them into a
box provided
Keep electrode holder in a hook provided. Never keep it on
the welding table
Remove all inflammable
materials from the welding spot
PERSONAL PROTECTIVE EQUIPMENT (PPE)
Fire Extinguisher
It is always a good
practice to know where
the fire extinguishers
are located and know
how to use them
Do not use water
in Electric fire
Job Safety
Prepare a proper sequence
of operation.
Grip the job properly for welding
Use proper Jig and Fixture
Don't hasten during
cutting operation
.
Select proper filler rod, flux
and temperature according to
the metal
Tools & Equipments Safety
Use proper tool for each job
Clean the tools after
finishing the job and keep
them in it's own place
Never use electrode holder with
defected jaws & improper
insulation
Never strike an arc on a
compressed gas cylinder
Electric arc
damaged
Use soap water for checking
of gas leakage
Don't operate the machine
beyond its rated load
Don't adjust the current rating
while welding is in progress
Don't try to repair the
welding machine by it's own
All repairing and alteration
should be handed over to a
skilled electrician
The welding cable and
equipments should be in good
working state so that the same
.
may not cause of accident
Electric welding machine
must be earthen properly
Shut down the plant
during intervals
