 Adolescence is a period of human life from 12 years


to 19/20 years.
 Adolescence comes from the latin word adolescere
which means to grow to maturity.
 Adolescence is that span of years during which boys
and girls move from childhood to adulthood
mentally, emotionlly, socially and physically.
 It is a period of translation when changes of attitude
and behaviour are most rapid.

Impact of Media on Adolescent Development

 The growth of technology has changed the world.


 Adolescents use the internet, cellphones, television,
computer, video games on the daily bases.
 Media is the collective communication outlets or
tools are used to store and deliver information or
data to a large number of people.
 Mass media include newspaper, radio, magazine,
television, internet…
 So, according to Stanley Hall
“Adolescence is a period of stress and storm”
 They are mainly attracted by mass media and it
becomes the major platform of their entertainment.

 Social media are computer mediated technologies
that allow the creation and sharing of information,
ideas, career interests and other form of expression
 Social and emotional development takes place
through mobile.
 They can develop one’s identity and unique social
skills.

Adolescents get detailed health information about

 Reducing mental stress
 Nutrients present in fruits and vegetables

1.Cyber bullying and online harassment.

• Cyber bullying is purposely using digital media to


communicate false, sensitive or hateful
information about another person.
• Most common online risk and is a peer-peer risk.
2.SEXTING
 It is a form of texting where individuals send,
receive or forward sexually explicit messages,
photographs or images via digital device.
 Some teens who are involved in this kind of
activity have been charged with pomographic
charges.
3.Facebook Depression
 The depression that develops teens when teens
spend a great deal of time on facebook.
 They began to exhibit symptoms like
feeling isolated, sleep deprivation, drug abuse,
self destruction behaviour…
4. Privacy Concerns
Main risk for adolescents are
 Lack of privacy

5. Digital Footprint
 When we visit various websites , we leave behind
evidence of which we have visited.
 This collective ongoing record of ones web activity
is called as digital footprint.
6.Influence of advertisement on buying

 Many social media sites display multiple


advertisements that target people on the basis of
their web browsing activity.
 They promotes a kind of obsession in them to buy
things that are advertised.
7. Media Violence
 It refers to the presentation in mass media,
depicting aggressive acts or violence committed by
a person or a model upon the others.
 These visuals of media violence affect adolescents
emotionally and psychologically.
8. Racial Sterotyping
 Most of the media portray the minority people as
aggressive, smugglers and immoral people.
 This develops in the mind of adolescents that “they
are bad” , which later on get stabilized as
sterotypes.
9. Gender Sterotypes
 Women are inferior to men
 Women lack unity among themselves
 Home management and child rearing are the roles
suitable for women
 Women are more conscious about their physical
appearence than intellectual development.
 Qualities like leadership, intelligence are only for
men.
Impact of Media Violence on Adolescent
Behaviour
 Commit acts like kidnapping classmates, exhorting
money, bullying others who do not act according to their
dictates etc…
 Stimulate adolescents to commit sex related crimes.
 Instigates them to indulge in undesireable acts that lower
their self-esteem like ragging, harassing etc…
 Addicts to intoxicants and narcotives
 Blackmail women for money
 For raising money to buy these substances , they nay
indulge in robbery.

4. Superiority and interiority complex
5. Influence of wrong personalities

8. Lack of interest in family gathering

10. Lack of interest in studies.
CONCLUSION
 Media are helpful in many ways.
 If adolescents use media properly, they will
advance and excel in education.
 If not, they will be affected.
