SUBTRACTING Section 8.1

POLYNOMIALS
DEFINITION

Polynomial:
An expression that is the sum of terms in the form of
ax k where…
a is the coefficient.
x is the variable.
k is the degree.

Polynomials can be classified two different ways!

By Degree
By Terms
CLASSIFYING BY DEGREE

Degree: the greatest exponent in any term of a polynomial.

Degree Name

0 Constant
1 Linear
2 Quadratic
3 Cubic
4 Quartic
5 Quintic
6+ Nth Degree
CLASSIFYING BY TERM

Term: the number of “items” being added/subtracted in a polynomial.

# Of Terms Name
1 Monomial
2 Binomial
3 Trinomial

4+ Polynomial
LET’S PRACTICE!

Classify each of the following polynomials by degree AND term.

1) 6x 3 +2x 3 +x-4

2) 2x 4 -7x 2 -9

3) 23x 2
WHAT IS IMPORTANT ABOUT
STANDARD FORM?
Terms must be arranged in order by degree.
The leading coefficient is the coefficient in front of
the term with the highest degree.

YOU TRY! Rearrange the following polynomials in standard form

AND identify the leading coefficient.

1) 3x 2 +4x 5 -7x

2) 5y-9-2y 4 -6y 3
ADDING POLYNOMIALS

1) (2x 2 +5x-7) + (3-4x 2 +6x)

2) (3y+y 3 -5) + (4y 2 -4y+2y 3 +8)

3) (5x 2 -3x+4) + (6x-3x 2 -3)

SUBTRACTING POLYNOMIALS

1) (3-2x+2x 2 ) – (4x-5+3x 2 )

2) (7p+4p 3 -8) – (3p+2-9p)

3) (4x 3 -3x 2 +6x-4) – (-2x 3 +x 2 -2)

ACTIVITY TIME!

1) You will work with the person sitting next to you.

2) Send one person up to a get a bag with cards and a
penny in it.
3) Remove the cards from the bag, and place them visibly
on your desk.
4) Create THREE polynomials.
5) Flip the penny:
 If the penny lands on heads, you will add your two
polynomials together.
 If the penny lands on tails, you will subtract your two
polynomials.
6) Continue in the same fashion, but create different
polynomials each time.
