Axial Fan and Compressor
◦ Before the current technology, an axial
turbine that the function is reversed as a
compressor has a low efficiency of less than
40%. Where conversely, an axial compressor
that the function is reversed as a turbine has
only the efficiency of 55%. Nowadays, after
the technological advancement of the
aerodynamic behavior and development of
airplanes, this turbomachinery can reach an
efficiency of up to 90%.
Axial Fan and Compressor
◦ The figure on the right shows the typical blade section
of a turbine and compressor. From there, it can be seen
that the turbine has a greater angular turning of the
relative velocity vector than from the compressor. In
terms of the blade forms, these two have their own
differences:
◦ a. Axial turbine: the blades form a converging
passage, where the inlet has a greater area than the
outlet, and the fluid is being accelerated in the passage.
◦ b. Axial compressor: the blades form an increasing
cross-sectional area where the fluid is being diffused
through it.
Axial Fan and Compressor
◦ When discussing the axial compressor, we
have to consider that the flow of the fluid
will have changes taking place through a
compressor stage. Usually, a stage consists
of a row of moving blades attached to the
periphery of a rotor hub followed by a row
of fixed blades attached to the walls of the
outer casing.
◦ This compressor stage will give an overall
pressure ratio from inlet to outlet due to
the number of these stages.

◦ Energy Transfer:

◦ Reaction Ratio: The measure of the static enthalpy rise that occurs in the rotor
expressed as a percentage of the total static enthalpy rise across the stage.
