Carbonyl Process
• Metallic ores of iron are reacted with carbon monoxide
at high pressures
• The ore such reacted with CO forms carbonyls

• Fe+CO5= [Fe(CO)5 ]

• Iron forms [Fe(CO)5 ]


• Thus formed compounds are liquids at room
temperature.
Production of powders
• The liquid iron pentacarbonyl is vaporised at
1500 c
• These vapours are sent into decomposers at
250o c
• This decomposition produces high pure iron
powders
• [Fe(CO)5 ]= Fe+CO5
• dG° = -RTln(Pfe(c0)5/afe Pco5)
