Compare & Contrast

contemporary and modern dance .
MO DE RN D ANC E
Modern dance was also designed to
encourage freedom of movement and
personal interpretation while weaving in
many varied and demanding steps and
positions. It evolved as a protest against
both the balletic and the interpretive dance
traditions of the time.
MO DE RN D ANC E
Modern dance, the other major genre of
Western theatre dance, developed in the early
20th century as a series of reactions against
what detractors saw as the limited, artificial
style of movement of ballet and its frivolous
subject matter.
MO DE RN D ANC E
Perhaps the greatest pioneer in modern dance
was Isadora Duncan. She believed that ballet
technique distorted the natural movement of
the body, that it “separated the gymnastic
movements of the body completely from the
mind,” and that it made dancers move like
“articulated puppets” from the base of the
spine.
MO DE RN D ANC E
Duncan worked with simple movements and
natural rhythms, finding her inspiration in the
movements of nature—particularly the wind
and waves—as well as in the dance forms that
she had studied in antique sculpture.
MO DE RN D ANC E
Elements that were most characteristic of her
dancing included lifted, far-flung arm
positions, an ecstatically lifted head,
unconstrained leaps, strides, and skips, and,
above all, strong, flowing rhythms in which
one movement melted into the next.
MO DE RN D ANC E
Her costumes, too, were unconstrained; she
danced barefoot and uncorseted in simple,
flowing tunics, with only the simplest props
and lighting effects to frame her movements.
MO DE RN D ANC E
Instead of defying gravity, as in ballet, modern
dancers emphasized their own weight. Even
their jumps and high extensions looked as if
they were only momentarily escaping from the
downward pull of the Earth, and many of their
movements were executed close to, or on, the
floor.
MO DE RN D ANC E
Graham developed a wide repertoire of falls,
for example, and Mary Wigman’s style was
characterized by kneeling or crouching, the
head often dropped and the arms rarely lifted
high into the air.
CO NT E MPO RA RY DANC E
Contemporary danced emerged in the 20th
century as dancers strived to exhibit more
personal expression in their dancing. It was a
way to stray from the more traditional and
structured styles.
CO NT E MPO RA RY DANC E
Breaking the conventional style of dance,
contemporary focuses on the freedom of
movement.
When performing, dancers focus on
connecting their mind and body through fluid
dance moves.
CO NT E MPO RA RY DANC E

This allows dancers to explore emotions, and

use their natural energy to portray personal
expression in their dance techniques.
CO NT E MPO RA RY DANC E
There is no rule of thumb to what type of
elements their performance can include, but
you will find a combination of techniques
often ranging from ballet, jazz, modern, break
dancing and even yoga and Pilates.
CO NT E MPO RA RY DANC E
It also referred to the movement of new
dancers who did not want to follow strict
classical ballet and lyrical dance forms, but
instead wanted to explore the area of
revolutionary unconventional movements that
were gathers from all dance styles of the
world.
