FOLK AND CONTEMPORARY DANCES

Group 5

Contemporary dance is a popular style of dance that is frequently misinterpreted.

It is a raw kind of dance which does not observe any rules, unlike traditional dance
ways. It presents the world from the perspective of the performer, their experiences,
tales, and emotions, and is popular with both spectators and dancers. We take a closer
look at what contemporary dance and how it is done in this research.

WHAT IS A CONTEMPORARY DANCE?

Contemporary dance arose in the twentieth century as dancers sought to
express themselves more fully via their movements. It was a means to break
away from the more regimented and traditional designs. Contemporary dance
deviates from the norm by emphasizing the freedom of movement.
Dancers focus on linking their body and mind through fluid dance
techniques when performing. This helps dancers to express themselves through
their dance techniques by exploring emotions and using their inherent energy.
There is no set formula for what types of components they can use in their
performance, but you can expect a mix of ballet, jazz, modern, break dance, and
even yoga and Pilates.
HOW IS IT PERFORMED?
Most dancers like to perform with bare feet or soft ballet shoes, with outfits
that represent their story and allow for smooth on-stage mobility. The dancers will
usually be able to stay focused on floor work & roam about freely in the studio
and production venue.
Contemporary dancers enjoy performing it because it challenges
traditional limitations and frequently combines adaptability and improvisation.
They can make their own techniques or routines, ranging from sharp and sudden
to flowing and extended.
It is performed to a range of music genres since it incorporates numerous
styles. The soundtrack will be crucial in telling the story and setting the tone.
Some performances may even be voice-over or silent.
5 CHARACTERISTICS OF A CONTEMPORARY DANCE
1. Graham
Martha Graham inspired the name. Contraction, release, recovery, and fall
are the mainstays of this form. Graham is known for his utilization of floor work
and pelvic and abdominal contractions. The approach is much more grounded,
and the technique is clearly at odds with the thin, delicate, soaring ideals of
ballet.
2. Limon
Jose Limon inspired the name. It entails investigating how energy is used
in relation to gravity, as well as working with weight in terms of rebound, fall,
suspension, and recovery. Limon technique employs the sensation of "heavy
energy" and weight in the body to commence movement, and movement is
initiated utilizing breath to raise and swings through the body to generate and halt
movement, making it a highly pleasant experience to practice.
3. Release
In the pursuit of fluidity and clarity, as well as the efficient use of breath
and energy, the emphasis is on minimizing tension. We release through the
muscles and joints to generate ease of movement in Release method, and we
release the breath to support the body's release. A dance form that also serves
as a terrific way to unwind.
4. Improvisation
It primarily focuses on the interaction between movements and
performance, as well as movement investigation. Individual movement material
can be developed through a number of creative approaches.
5. Improvisation in Contact
Fluid movement, weight exchange, and touch characterize contact
improvisation, a pair dance form. The dance is improvised by the partners using
their natural body movement.
