PEACOCK

 Peacock, also called peafowl, any of three species of resplendent birds of the
pheasant family, Phasianidae (order Galliformes). Strictly, the male is a peacock,
and the female is a peahen; both are peafowl.
 Cat repellent and mothballs around planting beds Caution should be used so as
not to allow young children or animals to ingest the repellents. Peafowl are afraid
of dogs. ... Water is one of the best-known deterrents for peafowl.
PEACOCK

 . Only Indian peacocks have the famous

flashy feather trains and vibrant blue and
green plumage. Indian peahens are mostly
brown and grey with a few green feathers.
Peacocks use their trains to attract mates –
the bigger and prettier the train, the more
likely a peacock is to attract a mate.
MALE AND
FEMALE
TYPES OF
PEACOCK
 There are only three species of
peafowl: Indian, Green and Congo.
They are distinguished by their colour
and size
 .
Indian Peacock
 The most recognizable peacock species, the Indian
peacock is native to India, Sri Lanka and other
parts of eastern Asia. The peacocks of the species
display the famous tail plumage used in courting
rituals and have bright, blue heads and crest
colorings. The bright coloring and large tail
feathers are used to attract peahens
Green Peacock
 The Green peacock, also known as the
Javanese peacock, is native to the
Indonesian island of Java in southeast
Asia. Green peacocks are similar to
Indian peacocks in that they have
large, brightly coloured trains and use
the feathers in courting rituals. The
heads and crests of green peacocks
are a deep green colour rather than
blue, making them distinguishable
from Indian peacocks
Congo Peacock
•A relatively recent discovery, the
Congo peacock is an African native
that more closely resembles typical
pheasants than their flashy peacock
brethren. Absent of, brightly colored
trains and colored blue, the males are
of small stature compared to other
species. The peahens of the Congo
are dappled green and brown,
resembling young versions of green
or Indian peacocks.
FACTS ON PEACOCK

 . Peafowl are omnivores, eating insects, plants and small animals

 Peacocks grow 90 - 130 cm tall and weigh around four to six kilograms.
Peahens are slightly smaller.
 According to National Geographic, the peacock is one of the largest flying
birds if you count the length of its train (around 150 cm, or 60 per cent of a
peacock’s body length) and wingspan (140 cm to 160 cm).
 Peacocks can (sort of) fly – they tend to run and take several small leaps
before a big final hop. They can’t stay airborne for very long, but their huge
wingspan allows them to flutter quite far.
 Peacocks have a top running speed of around 16 km/h.
PEOFOWL

•Peafowl" is the general

name for the family of
birds. A peacock is a male
peafowl. A peahen is a
female peafowl. The young
of a peacock and a peahen
are called peachicks.
