Objectives:
At the end of this chapter, the student should be able
to:
▪Examine Dr. Jose Rizal's life, family, childhood and early
education
▪Describe the efforts, diligence and determination of
Rizal to achieve excellence in his education
▪Compare and contrast Dr. Jose Rizal's family and the
family of present generation
▪Idebtify the people and events and their influence in the
army life of rizal and;
▪Gleab from the Dr. Jose p. Rizal's experience the traits
that would later define his character

¤ Wisdom and sacrifices of Jose rizal for country earned


him the title as Greatest Mayan lived. No Asian can surpass
his ingenuity and intelligence .
¤ Though his life short, scientist and scholars find worthy
to study his life. Dr Austin Craig was first to traced Rizal's
family roots.
¤ Rizal is 9th generation patrilinial descendants of Chinese
immigrant Don Domingo Lamco( Chninese name: pinyin:
Ke Yinan) his great great grand father .
¤ Lamcos's wife is Inez de la Rosa, a Filipino and adaughter of
Agustin Chinco.
¤ Lamco changed his Chinese surname to Spanish
and changed it As "Mercado" means "Market".

¤ Lamco started business s and become successful


entrepreneur despite of Spanish discrimination on chineses.
¤ June 1697, Baptized in Catholic church of Manila
And his 35 years old that time
¤ He became a Chinese community leader at Biñan
¤ Lamco's son is Francisco Mercado
¤ Grandson is Juan Mercado. Francisco and Juan
Both married mestizas.
¤ Cirila Alejandra, wife of Juan and daughter of immigrants
trader. They are parents of Rizal''s
father. When Rizal's father born, his parents
transfered to Calamba. Their house is the

¤ Paciano, Rizal's brother, was identified with one of the


martyred priest, Jose Burgos so the family changed their
surname from Mercado to Rizal.
¤ Rizal had Spanish, Japanese and neuritis ancestry.
¤ Teodora(Rizal's mother) great grand father, Eugenio Ursua
was a descebdabt of Japanese settlers.
¤ Ursua married a Filipina named Benigna and their union
produced Regina Ursua.
¤ Regina married atty. Manuel D. Quintos and had daughter
named Brigida. Brigida married half-caste Spaniards named
Lorenzo Alberto. Brigida and Lorenzo are parents of
Teodora( Mother of rizal)

¤ Rizal's family belong to " Principalia" town of distinguished


families.
¤ Because of hard and honest work, Rizal's parents
we're able to live well. From farms, they have corn, rice,
sugarcane. They raised turkeys, pigs, chickens etc. Doña
Teodora manage grocery store and small flour mill.
¤ They build large stone house near church. Owned a carriage
which status symbol is ilustrados in Philippines and library
with,1000 volumes.
¤ Their children studying colleges andparticipated in social and
religious affairs in community. They
were gracious and hospitable to all guest and visitors.

¤ Rizal family had simple and contented life. Don Francisco


and Doña Teodora loved their children but not spoiled. They
are strict and teaches their children to love God. To behave
well, obedient, and respect to people especially old folks.
¤ When children got into mischief they were given a good
spank. They believed in saying " Spare the rod and spoil the
child ".

■ THE HERO'S FATHER

° Don Francisco Mercado Rizal (1818-1898)


was bon in Bijan, Laguna. Studied Latin philosophy
at College of SanJose In Manila. After his parents
death, Francisco and his sister moved to calamba.
Became farmer of dominican-owned hacienda. He
hardworking and independent-minded
who talked less but worked more.
Jose Rizal describe his father in his diary :

"My father was a model of fathers had given us an


education commensurate with our small fortune;
and though thrift he was able to build a stone house;
erect a little nippa house in the middle of our
orchard under the shade of some
trees and others "

■ THE HERO'S MOTHER

° Doña Teodora Alonzo Y Realonda(1826-1911)


was born in Meisik, Sta. Cruz Manila. Studied at Colegio
de Sta. Rosa in Manila. A woman of refined culture and
character, with exemplary literary talents,
fortitude of a spartan woman and with business ability, she
managed a store.
Rizal lovingly described his mother:

" MY mother is a woman of more than ordinary


culture; she knows literature and speaks Spanish
better than I. She even corrected my poems and gave
me a wise advises when I styling rhetoric. She is a
mathematician and has read many books. "

¤ Both parents greatly influenced Rizal as shown in his


character.
¤ From his father he inherited a profound sense of dignity
and self-respect, seriousness and from his mother the
dreamer and bravery for sacrifices and her literary
prowess.
¤ Don Francisco and Doña Teodora blessed with 11 kids,
(2) Boys and (9) girls. They were as follows in the order of
their birth.
