IV. GEAR UP YOUR MIND

To understand the life of Rizal and how our National Hero turned out to be. There is a need to take a
glimpse at the factors which influenced him - the interplay of heredity as well as environment factors.
Rizal came from a mixture of races. From his father-side, his great granddather was a Chinese merchant
from Amoy, China. In the closing years of the 17 th century, Domingo Lamco who assumed the family surename
“Mercado” in consonance with the decree of Narciso Claveria to free all Spanish subjects and their children from
prejudices associated with having Chinese surnames. Lamco married a wealthy Chinese meztiza, Ines dela Rosa
and from Manila, they moved to Biñan and became tenants in the Dominican hacienda. (During those times, most
of the estate or a large portion of the town were owned by the Dominican friars) Rizal’s grandfather was Juan
Mercado who married Cirila Alejandro, a Chinese-Filipina mestiza. Juan and Cirila had fourteen (14) children, one
of whom was Rizal’s father, Don Francisco.
Don Francisco, Rizal’s father, was an erudite man. He took courses in Latin and Philosophy at Colegio de
San Jose in Manila. For Rizal, his father was a model faher because of his honesty, and prudence. Rizal inherited
from his father self-respect, serenity and poise, seriousness and a deep sense of dignity.
On the other hand, from his mother side, Rizal’s great grandfather was Manuel de Quintos from Lingayen,
Pangasinan, who married a woman with Japanese ancestry, Regina Ursua. One of the daughter, Brigida, married
Lorenzo Alberto Alonso. Brigida and Lorenzo had five (5) siblings, one of whom was Teodora, Rizal’s mother.
Doña Teodoro like her husband, Rizal’s father was an
educated woman. She completed her education at Colegio
de Santa Rosa. According to Rizal, his mother was a woman
of culture and religion, an industrious housewife to the point
of being self-sacrificing. She was also a disciplinarian from
whom Rizal learned the values of warmth and virtue. It
was believed that Rizal inherited from his mother the
temperament of a dreamer and a fondness of poetry, not
to forget, being stern as well as asceticism and self-sacrifice

The family of Don Francisco and Doña Teodora is a typical middle class (Principalia) family in the 19 th
century. Somehow, a life of comfort and affluence since the family belonged to the principalia. Listing down the
various aspects which would show why Rizal’s family thriving business in rice and sugar. The ownership of a house

made of adobe and hardwood. Ownership of carriage and horses; numerous books in a house library; personal
servants to take care of their needs; private tutoring for their children; and the ability to send their children for
education in Manila. From all these, it can be gleaned that socio-economic status of Rizal’s family is way beyond
