Learning Outcomes

 To manage dimensioning methods and processes

required for the manufacture of an engineering
component.
 To define principles of graphical language and
dimensional standards.
 To provide drawing that include the minimum number of
dimensions necessary in order to manufacture a
component.

Introduction

 Dimensioning: The dimension on a drawing are as

important as the drawing itself, and certain rules have to
be followed (BS 8888).
 To establish the exact shape of the item we require to
know the dimensions which govern its length, height and
thickness, also the diameter and depth of the hole and
its position in relation to the surface of the block.

Introduction

Dimension Arrowhead Guideline

Differentarrowheads will be used
in various industries. Dark
arrowhead will be used in our
manufacturing industry.

General Dimension

Dimension Format Guideline

Dimension lines should be drawn
at least 8 mm away from outlines
and from each other.

Chain and Auxiliary Dimensioning

Dimension Format Guideline

Should only be used where the
possible accumulation of
tolerances does not endanger the
function of the part.
Dimension is arranged in a
straight line. An overall dimension
is placed outside the smaller
dimension. One of the smaller
dimensions is generally omitted.

Parallel Dimensioning

Dimension Format Guideline

Alldimensions are shown from
the common base line.
Smaller dimension should be

placed nearer the view and the

larger further away so that
extension lines do not cross
dimension lines.
Extension lines may cross each

other or the outlines

Running Dimensioning

Dimension Format Guideline

The indication requires less
space.
Common origin is indicated with

a narrow continuous circle and

the dimensions placed near the
respective arrowheads.

Circle Dimensioning

Dimension Format Guideline

Symbol Ø is used for specifying
diameters and should be written.

Irregular Curve Dimensioning

Dimension Format Guideline

Irregularcurves can be
dimensioned by the uses if
ordinates.

Unidirectional and Aligned Dimensions

Dimension Format Guideline

Itis drawn parallel with the
bottom of the drawing sheet (Also
any notes which refer to the
drawing).
Aligned dimensions are shown in

parallel with the related dimension

line and positioned.

Unidirectional and Aligned Dimensions

Dimension Format Guideline

Angular dimensions on
engineering drawings.

Taper Dimensions

Dimension Format Guideline

The difference in magnitude
between dimensions X and Y
(whether diameters or widths)
divided by the length between
them defines a ratio.

Chamfer Dimensions

Dimension Format Guideline

Dimensioning internal and
external chamfers.

Dimensioning Radii / Fillet Dimensions

Dimension Format Guideline

The position of the centre of the
arc need not be located.

Dimensioning Holes

Dimension Format Guideline

Dimensioning holes will be in
label form.

Dimensioning Thread (Bolt, Screw, Nut or Holes)

 Metric Thread is ISO standard thread[3]:

 M is symbol for ISO metric threads.

 The nominal major diameter in mm – followed by the
symbol X (meaning “by”).
 The thread pitch in mm – followed by a dash (-).
 The grade of tolerance from fine to coarse. (Grade 3
through 5 are fine and 7 through 9 are coarse. Grade
6 is the most commonly used and is the medium
tolerance metric thread. A letter placed after it is the

thread tolerance class of the internal (uppercase e.g.

G or H) or external thread (lowercase e.g. g or h).
G/g is tight allowance while H/h is no allowance.
Allowance is the tightness of fit between the mating
parts. A blank space denotes a right-hand thread while LH
letters is left-hand thread.
• The depth of internal threads or length of external
threads in mm. If the thread goes through the part, it is
left blank or THRU.
