Box and Whisker Plot ( sometimes called box plot) is often used to provide a
visual summary of a set of data. It shows the median, the first and third
quartiles, and the minimum or maximum values of a data set.

Example 1. Rey has taken two test in chemistry class. He scored 72 on the first test, for
which the mean of all scores was 65 and the standard deviation was 8. He received 60 on
the second test, for which the mean of all scores was 45 and the standard deviation was 12.
In comparison to the other students, did Rey do better on the first test or the second test?
Example 2. A consumer group tested a sample of 100 light bulbs. It found that the mean life
expectancy of the bulbs was 842 hrs, with the standard deviation of 90. One particular light
bulb from the Dura Bright Company had a z-score of 1.2. What was the life span of the
light bulb?
Example 3. Baylee received a score of 70 on a test for which the mean score
was 65.5. Baylee has learned that the z-score for his test is 0.6. What was the
SD for this set of test?
Application:
1. Polytechnic University of the Philippines Sta.Rosa City Branch conducts placement
examination to all incoming freshmen. The examination scores if the 100 examinees last
semester were approximately normally distributed with mean score of 80 and standard
deviation of 5. What is the probability that randomly chosen student got a score below
70? Above 82? Between 75 and 90?
2. A soda machine dispenses soda into 12-ounces cups. Tets show that the
actual amount of soda dispensed is normally distributed, with a mean of 11.5 oz
and a standard deviation of 0.2 oz.
a. What percent of cups will receive less than 11.25 oz soda?
b. What percent of cups will receive between 11.2 and 11.55 oz of soda?
c. If a cup is filled at random, what is the probability that the machine will
overflow the cup?
LINEAR REGRESSION AND CORRELATION
Example;
A geologist might want to know if there is a relationship between the duration of an eruption of a geyser
and the time between the eruption. The data shows the bivariate data showing the time between two
eruptions and the duration of the second eruption for 10 eruptions of the geyser Old Faithful
