ASSESSMENT QUESTIONS

Answer the following:

Question No 1 [2 + 3 = 5]

(a) Name the laws of conservation followed in Kirchhoff’s junction rule and
loop rule for electric network.

(b) A potentiometer wire of length 100 cm has a resistance of 100Ω. It is

connected in series with a resistance and a battery of emf 2V and of
negligible internal resistance. A source of emf 10 mV is balanced against
the length of 40 cm of the potentiometer wire. What is the value of the
external resistance?

Question No 2 [2 + 3 = 5]

(a) Mention at least two precautions that must be taken while comparing the
emfs of two primary cells using a potentiometer.

(b) The resistance of a 240V and 200W electric bulb when hot is 10 times its
resistance at room temperature. Find its resistance at room temperature.
If the working temperature of the filament is 2000°C, find the temperature
coefficient of the filament.

Question No 3 [2 + 3 = 5]

(a) Find the expression for the equivalent focal length when two thin convex
lenses are brought in contact.

(b) An object and a screen are placed 80 cm apart. There are two positions
at which a convex lens forms a real image on the screen, the
magnification in the two cases being 3/2 and 2/3. Calculate the focal length
of the lens.

Question No 4 [2 + 3 = 5]

(a) Mention two advantages a reflecting type telescope has over a refracting
type telescope.

(b) A telescope has an objective of focal length 50 cm and an eyepiece of
focal length 5 cm. The least distance of distinct vision is 25 cm. The
telescope is focused for distinct vision on a scale 200 cm away from the
object. Calculate:
(i) the separation between the objective and the eyepiece and
(ii) the magnification produced.

Question No 5 [2 + 3 = 5]

(a) State de Broglie hypothesis. Give one difference between matter wave
and electromagnetic wave.

(b) Obtain the de Broglie wavelength associated with thermal neutrons at

room temperature (27°C). Explain why a fast neutron beam needs to be
thermalized with the environment before it can be used for neutron
diffraction experiment.

Question No 6 [2 + 3 = 5]

(a) Photons of same intensity but of two different frequencies are incident on
a photosensitive Surface of a photoelectric cell. Draw a graph to show the
variation of photoelectric current with potential difference applied between
the plates of the photoelectric cell.

(b) Find the frequency of light, which ejects electrons from a metal surface
fully stopped by a retarding potential of 3V. The photoelectric effect begins
in this metal at a frequency of 6 × 1014s–1. Find the work function of the
metal in electron volt.
