SECTION – A (10 Marks)

(The following question is compulsory)
Question 1
𝟐𝟒
a) Two resistances when joined in parallel have an equivalent resistance of 𝟏𝟏 Ω. When
one of the resistance wires broke, the effective resistance becomes 3 Ω. Find the
resistance of the wire that broke.
b) A fuse wire is rated 8 A. Is it suitable to use with an electric appliance of rating
2 kW, 200 V? Justify your answer.
c) The speed of a wave in a medium is 960 ms-1. If 3600 waves pass through a point in
1 minute, then calculate the wavelength of the wave.
d) Two metallic blocks P and Q of masses in the ratio 2:1 are supplied the same amount
of heat. If rise in temperature are in the ratio 1:3, compare their specific heat
capacities.
e) What are the values of a and b in the following equation?
198U bU + α [2+2+2+2+2=10]
a 80

SECTION-B (40 marks)

(Attempt any four questions)
Question 2
a) A uniform meter scale is balanced at the 40 cm mark, when weights of 25 gf and
10 gf are suspended at 5 cm mark and 75 cm mark respectively. Calculate the
weight of the meter scale.
b) A boy standing between two cliffs claps and hears two echoes after 2 s and 2.5 s
respectively. Find the distance between the two cliffs.
[speed of sound in air is 330 m/s]
c) i) A tuning fork is vibrating in air. State whether the vibrations are natural or
damped.
ii) Why is a loud sound heard at resonance?
iii) State two points of difference between resonance and force vibrations.
[3+3+4 = 10]

Question 3
a) What mass of liquid X of specific heat capacity 0.84 Jg-1°C-1 at a temperature
40°C must be mixed with 100 g of liquid Y of specific heat capacity 2.1 Jg-1°C-1
at 20°C, so that the final temperature is 30°C?
b) How many α and β particles are emitted when 238U92 decays to 206U82? Give an
example of background radiation.
c) Give reasons for the following
i) No tracks are formed on ice during ice-skating.
ii) Base of the cooking utensils are made heavy.
