SECTION – A (40 Marks)

Question 1

a. State the law which gives us the quantitative definition of force.


b. State two conditions for total internal reflection.
c. Distinguish between work and power.
d. A boy weighing 500N runs upstairs from A to B as shown in the given figure. What work
is done against gravity?

e. State the principle of reversibility. [2+2+2+2+2=10]

a. Obtain a relation between kinetic energy and momentum.


b. What is meant by optical centre of a lens?
c. Mention two factors that affect the refractive index of a medium.
d. A wire of uniform thickness with a resistance of 16Ωis cut into two equal pieces and they
are joined in parallel. Find the resistance of the parallel combination.
e. Draw displacement-time graph for damped vibrations. [2+2+2+2+2=10]

Question 3

a. One cell and two different resistances are given to you. How will you connect the
resistances with the cell to get more current? Give reasons.
b. Draw the graph showing the variation of square of velocity of the body and its kinetic
energy for constant mass.
c. Distinguish between ordinary reflection and total internal reflection. (2 points)
d. State two factors that affect the fundamental frequency of the vibrations of a stretched
string.
e. The refractive index of water is 4/3 and that of glass is 3/2. Calculate the refractive index
of glass w.r.t. water.

Question 4

a. A block and tackle consists of three pulleys in each of the two blocks. Its efficiency is
60%. Calculate the effort required to lift a weight of 60kgf.
b. Differentiate between resistance and specific resistance.
c. A ray of light suffers refraction through a glass slab as shown in the figure. Draw the
emergent ray. Find the angle of incidence.

d. Distinguish between free and forced vibration.


e. Mention any two advantages of nuclear energy. [2+2+2+2+2=10]

Question 5

a. In the given figure a metre rod is balanced on a pivot at the 50cm mark. A weight of
0.15kg is suspended at 80cm mark while another body of 0.1kg is suspended at P. The
metre rod is uniform.

i. The distance of the point P from F.

ii. The mark where 0.1kg is to be suspended.
iii. The mass to be suspended at zero mark if the point P is 20cm from the pivot.
b. Draw a pulley system of velocity ratio 4 and mark all the tensions, direction of load and
effort.
c. Why is it easier to open a door by applying the force at the free end of it? [4+4+2=10]

a. Distinguish between single fixed pulley and single movable pulley. (3 points)
b. Derive K.E=(1/2) mv2 where symbols have their usual meanings.
c. Show graphically that the mechanical energy is conserved in motion under gravity.

a. In the given figure pendulum D is set into vibrations.

i. Which of the other three vibrate with maximum amplitude and why?
ii. Which two pendulums will be in phase?
iii. Name the phenomenon taking place.
b. A man stands between two high rise buildings and blows a whistle. He hears two
successive echoes after 0.4sand 1.6s. Calculate the distance between two buildings.

c. State how the factors affect the loudness of a sound. [4+3+3=10]

a. Draw a curve showing the variation in the angle of deviation with the angle of incidence
at a surface of a prism. Show the minimum deviation.
b. The diagram shows a 30°, 90°, 60° prism where angle A is 30° angle C is 60°.

b. A water pump lifts 450kg of water from a well 30m deep in one minute. Calculate the
horse power of the motor. (Take g=10m/s2 and 1 H.P =750 W)
c. Define gear ratio. What will be the gear ratio

a.A 12V battery of internal resistance 0.5 ohm is connected into an electrical circuit as
shown in the diagram. If the reading of voltmeter is 6V, Calculate the
i. reading of ammeter. ii. value of R iii. potential difference across R
