SECTION – A (40 Marks)

Question 1
a. What happens to the time period of a swing when you stand on the swing? Give
reasons.
b. In which unit is the mass of the proton measured? Define the unit.
c. How are renewable resources different from non-renewable resources?
d. An insect is crawling along a cycle rim of radius r and completes half a rotation in
10s. What will be the ratio of speed to velocity over that period of time?

e. If 3.15 J of work is done in moving 0.35 C of charge between the plates of a battery,
what is the potential difference across the plates?

a. It is easier for a man to swim in sea water than in river water. Give reasons for this.
b. Write any two of the laws of liquid pressure.
c. State the law of conservation of charge.
d. At what temperature is the reading on Celsius scale one third of that on Fahrenheit
scale?
e. Write the characteristics of image formed in a shaving mirror when someone keeps
his face close to the mirror. [2+2+2+2+2=10]

a. Write the two characteristics of wave motion.

b. The time periods of a pendulum at two different places are measured. The ratio of
the values of acceleration due to gravity at those two places is 36:81. Find the ratio
of the time periods.
c. Write any two advantages of Fortin’s barometer over a simple barometer.
d. State the laws of reflection.
e. In the following diagram, north pole of a magnet is placed as shown. Draw the
magnetic lines of force around the magnet and show the neutral points in that field.

a. Is it high or low resistance that is built into a voltmeter? Justify your answer.
b. Find the magnitude of force that has to act on a body of mass 15 kg, starting from
rest, so that the body gains a velocity of 35 m/s in 7s.
c. If a stone and a bunch of feathers of same mass are allowed to fall in air, the stone
falls faster. Give reasons.
d. Write the fundamental units for luminous intensity and solid angle.
e. State Archimedes’ principle. [2+2+2+2+2=10]

a. Distinguish between mass and weight.
b. When a hanging carpet is beaten with a stick, dust particles start coming out of it.
Give reasons.
c. Draw the displacement-time graph for a freely falling body.

(ii) temperature
Write the relation in each case.
b. Sound waves travel with a speed of about 330 m/s. What is the wavelength of sound
whose frequency is 660 hertz?
c. State the characteristics of a medium required for the propagation of sound.
d. In the given figure, P and Q represent displacement-distance graph for two sound
waves when they pass through air. What is the ratio between their (i) wavelength
(ii) amplitude (iii) velocities?

a. The area of a copper plate at 0℃ is 3m2. Calculate the increase in area of plate when
it is heated through 40℃. [Coefficient of linear expansion of copper is 0.000016/℃]
b. Distinguish between convection and radiation based on the following points:
(i) speed of the process
(ii) direction of heat transfer
c. In the following diagram a metal rod is clamped at two ends with some clips. Some
paper clips are made to cling to the rod with the help of some Vaseline. Observe
what happens to the paper clips as the Bunsen burner is lit and heat is applied to
one end of the metal rod. Explain your observations.

d. Why are light coloured clothes generally worn in summer? [3+2+3+2=10]

a. In the given diagram, an object is placed in front of a concave mirror as shown
below. Complete the ray diagram to show the formation of image.

b. State the number of images of an object placed between two mirrors, formed in each
case when the two mirrors are inclined to each other at (i) 72o (ii) 45o
c. Write one similarity and one dissimilarity between a plane mirror and a convex
mirror.
d. Why does a driver prefer a convex mirror as a rear view mirror? Explain with

b. Differentiate between primary and secondary cells on the following points:

c. The current in a circuit is 2.5 × 10 –2 A. How long does it take for .075 C of
charge to pass any given point in the circuit?
d. In the given diagram, the ammeter reads 1.5A and the voltmeter reading is 3.45 V
across the resistor. Calculate the magnitude of the resistance R.

a. In the following diagram, some iron pins are clinging to the north pole of a bar
magnet. Name and explain the phenomenon.

b. A gold leaf electroscope with a metal sphere is taken. The sphere is earthed and a
negatively charged rod is brought towards the sphere.
Draw the following diagrams carefully and show the charges on the sphere and the
leaves in (b), (c) and (d). Why is the sphere earthed in (a)?
