alternatives in all such questions.
S. No. Question Marks

Section – A
All questions are compulsory. In case of internal choice,
attempt any one of them.
1 Sketch the graph showing variation of stopping potential with 2
frequency of incident radiation for two different photosensitive
materials A & B. What information do you get from the slope of
the graphs?

2 Name the type of EM waves having a wavelength range of 0.1 m to 2

1 mm. Write their two uses. OR
(a) Why is it necessary in microwave ovens to select the frequency
of microwaves to match the resonant frequency of water
molecules?
(b) Write two important uses of infrared waves.
3 Why a photo diode is connected in reverse bias? Justify. 2

SECTION – B
All questions are compulsory. In case of internal choices,
attempt anyone.
4 Figure shows variation of stopping potential (V 0) with the
frequency (v) for two photosensitive materials MA and MB.
1

(a) Why is the slope same for both lines?

(b) For which material will the emitted electrons have greater
kinetic energy for the incident radiation of the same frequency?
Justify your answer.

5 (a) Derive the expression of lens maker’s formula for convex 3

lens.
(b) The radii of curvature of the surfaces of a double convex
lens are 20cm and 40cm respectively, and its focal length is
20 cm. what is the refractive index of the material of the
lens? OR
3
(a) Draw a neat labelled ray diagram of a compound microscope.
Explain briefly it’s working.
(b) Why must both the objective and the eye-piece of a compound
microscope have short focal lengths?
6 Using Bohr’s postulates, obtain the expression for the total energy 3
of the electron in the stationary states of the hydrogen atom.

7 (a) Draw a labelled diagram to show the image formation by an 2

astronomical telescope in normal adjustment.
(b) Compare a reflecting type telescope with a refracting type 1
telescope.

8 (a) In Young’s double slit experiment to produce interference 2

pattern, obtain the conditions for constructive and destructive
interference. Hence, deduce the expression for the fringe width.
(b) How does the fringe width get affected, if the entire 1
experimental apparatus of Young is immersed in water?

9 Find the ratio between the wavelengths of the ‘most energetic’ 3

spectral lines in the Balmer and Paschen series of the hydrogen
spectrum.
OR
1
a) Explain the origin of various spectral series of hydrogen
atom. 2
b) Show that the shortest wavelength lines in Lymen, Balmer &
Paschen series have their wavelengths in the ratio 1:4:9.

10 A converging lens of refractive index 1.5 has a power of 10 D.

When it is completely immersed in a liquid, it behaves as a 3
diverging lens of focal length 50 cm. Find the refractive index of
the liquid.
11 (a) State the essential condition for diffraction of light 1
(b) Write the relation for width of central maxima in terms of
1
wavelength ‘λ’, width of slit ‘a’, and separation between slit and
screen ‘D’. 1
(c) If the width of the slit is made double the original width, how
does it affect the size and intensity of the central band ?
12 A solar cell is basically a p-n junction which generates emf when
solar radiation falls on the p-n junction. It works on the same
principle (photovoltaic effect) as the photodiode, except that no
external bias is applied and the junction area is kept much larger 5
for solar radiation to be incident because we are interested in more
power. A p-Si wafer of about 300 µm is taken over which a thin
layer (~0.3 µm) of n-Si is grown on one-side by diffusion process.
The other side of p-Si is coated with a metal (back contact). On the
top of n-Si layer, metal finger electrode (or metallic grid) is
deposited. This acts as a front contact. The
metallic grid occupies only a very small fraction of the cell area
(<15%) so that light can be incident on the cell from the top. The
generation of emf by a solar cell, when light falls on, it is due to
the following three basic processes: generation, separation and
collection—
I. Working principle of solar cell is same as:
a) Photodiode
b) Zener diode
c) LED
d) Half wave rectifier
II. Which type of external biasing is applied in Solar cell?
a) Forward
b) Reverse
c) both (a) and (b)
d) No external biasing is applied
III. Which of the following is true for a solar cell?
a) hv < E
b) hv>E
c) E = hv
d) None of these
IV. What is the principle of Solar cell?
V. In a solar cell,
a) Junction area is large
b) Junction area is small
c) Junction area is negligible
d) None of these
