What is engine room?
• On a ship, the engine room is the compartment
where the machinery for marine propulsion is
located.

What is Arrangement Plan? 


• Shows the layout of construction works,
including locations, references and sizes.
• Present the overall composition of an object.
In general, merchant ships having nine (9) decks including 4 engine room decks and 3-4 accommodation
deck. While upper deck or main deck is considered as reference deck i.e. origin (0).
Sewage Treatment Plant

The purpose of the sewage treatment plant on ships is to decompose the raw sewage onboard ships.

Sewage on a ship is generally the waste produced from toilets, urinals and water closet scuppers.
This sewage cannot be held on board for a much longer period & thus has to be discharged overboard.
Before discharging it into the sea, it has to be treated so that there should not be any dirt and solid particles present
in it.
Fresh Water Expansion Tank

It has three major functions –

a. The cooling water in the main engine and compressor expands due
to the heat generated. So, to facilitate that expansion freshwater
expansion tank is used.

b. With the help of freshwater expansion tank, we get to know if any


internal leakage has taken place inside the cooling system. If the
water level in the tank is decreasing continuously then it means
that some internal leakage may have taken place in the main
engine jacket water cooling system or compressor cooling systems.
Fill the expansion tank with water when the water level in it goes
down.

c. It is used as a chemical dosing tank. Some chemicals must be


added to the water which is used for the cooling of the liner,
cylinder head cover and exhaust valve casing to prevent problems
of scaling, corrosion and erosion.
Main Engine Lube Oil Storage Tank and Main Engine Lube Oil Settling Tank

Storage Tank – Stores lube oil for lubrication of the crankshaft, cross-head, piston, cylinder liners etc.

Settling Tank – The purpose of settling tank in the ship is to remove impurities from the oil with the help of
gravity. The lube oil after lubrication of the main engine again comes back into the sump.
Main Air Bottle or Air Reservoir

The main air bottle or air receiver is a


large reservoir having the shape of a bottle
used to store compressed air supplied by
the main air compressor of the ship at high
pressure of about 30 bar.
Deck Air Compressor

Generally, it is located on E/R deck 1 for producing 7 bar compressed air for main deck purposes. i.e. spray
painting, use to operate various pneumatic tools and cleaning.
Auxiliary Boiler
Marine auxiliary boiler is used to produce steam on ship for various purposes.
Calorifier
A calorifier is a heat exchanger which heats water indirectly by circulating is over a heating
coil or multiple coils. The source of heat can be hot water or steam or electric heater.
Hot Water Circulating Pump
Two hot water circulating pumps are present. One is continuously in use and another pump is
on standby mode. 
Waste Oil Service Tank
This is a tank where all the oily waste is collected from the sludge tank, oily bilge tank and
various oil drain tank.
Incinerator
The incinerator is an apparatus for burning waste oil only (earlier plastics also but now
plastics are restricted to burn) at a high temperature until it is reduced to ash. From the waste oil
service tank, the oil comes in the incinerator for burning.
Electrical Workshop and Electrical Store
Small repair and maintenance of small electrical machines are done here. Various repairing
tools are present here.
Sterntube Lube Oil High Gravity Tank
It has a capacity of 500-700 litres.
This lube oil is used for the lubrication of the stern tube and to maintain the pressure of water,
so that the water cannot come inside the engine room. The oil comes to the stern tube by gravity
only. i.e. there is no pump.
Main Boiler
Upper part of main boiler can be visible from deck one of engine room layout.
The boiler is used to convert feed water into steam.
Boiler Control Panel
Various control apparatus is present here. The amount of fuel and oxygen regulation for the
burner is done from here.
The boiler control panel provides the operation, control for the safe running of the boiler.
Inert Gas Platform
Stairs to the inert gas platform are provided from deck one of ship’s engine room layout.
Various control apparatus is present on the inert gas platform. The amount of fuel and oxygen
regulation for the burner is done from here.
Engine Spare Parts Room
It consists of various small spare parts. i.e. M/E spare parts (fuel injector, various valves),
boiler spare parts, generator spare parts, air compressor spare parts and pumps etc.
Engine Room Workshop
The engine room layout of ships consists of one engine room workshop as well.
It is an air-conditioned workshop with the engine control room. It consists of a lathe machine,
grinding machine, welding machine, and various tools.
Pump Panel
It is located on deck one of ship’s engine room layout.
It the control panel for various pumps on the ship. Pumps can be started and stop from here.
Diesel Generator Control Panel
Deck one of ship’s engine room layout also consists of diesel generator control panel
Visually, a control panel is a set of displays that indicate the measurement of various
parameters like voltage, current and frequency, through gauges and meters.
Fuel Oil Settling Tank and Fuel Oil Service Tank
It has a capacity of 25 tonnes each. Both tanks consist of the heating coil.
From the storage tank (wing tank) HFO comes in fuel oil settling tank and heat the HFO at 65-
70oC and creates heavy and light phase. 
From the service tank, the HFO goes to the main engine fuel oil circulating pump (pressure is
up to 5kg/cm2) and from there it goes to fuel oil heaters for decreasing the viscosity and increasing
the temperature of fuel oil.
Diesel Oil Service Tank and Diesel Oil Settling Tank
Engine room layout of deck one consists of both these tanks as well.
It has a capacity of 5 tonnes each. It does not have any heating coil Because already have low
viscosity.
In settling tank, the separation is done by the gravity itself.
Diesel Generator Lube Oil Storage Tank and Diesel Generator Lube Oil Settling Tank
  It is the lube oil for diesel generator system.
At first from the storage tank, a required amount of L.O goes for the lubrication and it comes
back to settling tank.
  Settling tank may have a heating coil which helps to create two phases i.e. heavy and light
phase.
Engine Room Arrangement Plan Importance

• Provide ship designers, ship owners, ship operators, shipping


companies, shipmasters and engine-room staff with information aiming
at enhancing engine-room safety and efficiency through design, layout
and arrangement.

• Engine room usually located near the bottom at the rear or aft end of
the vessel and comprises few compartments. These designs maximizes
cargo carrying capacity of the vessel and situates the prime mover
close to the propeller, minimizing equipment cost and problems posed
from long shaft lines.

COPT Platform
• Cargo Oil Pump Turbine (COPT) Platform is the first platform when we come across on
deck 3 of engine room arrangement.

• This COPT platform is only on tanker ships.

• This platform consists of –

• Cargo oil pump steam turbine.


• Cargo oil pump turbine condenser or dumping steam condenser
Cargo Oil Pump Steam Turbine
• here are 3 CARGO OIL PUMPS and these pumps are driven by the turbine and the
turbine is driven by the steam.
• These pumps are used to charge and discharge the oil cargo from the respective cargo
holds.
• During discharging we require more amount of steam to drive the turbine in an
adequate manner to discharge the oil cargo from the ship to the big oil tanks on a port.
• That is why we use a steam turbine because we can vary the speed of discharge by
varying the amount of steam according to the location of an oil tank on a port.
Cargo Oil Pump Steam Turbine
Condenser / Dumping Steam Condenser
• After rotating the turbine, the steam goes to COPT condenser and this condensate steam
is cooled down by the seawater supplied by ‘COPT condenser seawater pump’ then that
condensate goes to hot well to increase the temperature of the feedwater going for a
boiler.
Ballast Water Pump Motor
• They pump water in and out of the ballast water tanks during loading, off-loading and
trim of the vessel.
Central Cooler
• Engine room arrangement consists of central cooler on deck 3.
• There are 2 central coolers, one is in continuous use and another one is on standby
mode.
• Nowadays we do not directly use seawater in various machinery (mainly for jacket
cooling of a main and auxiliary engine) because of high chances of scale formation and
corrosion.
Auxiliary Feedwater Pump
• There are two vertically mounted centrifugal pumps.
• One is in continuous use and another pump is on standby mode.
• These are the dedicated pumps for economiser and composite boiler to supply feed
water.
• These pumps also take suction from the hot well and supply it to the feed check valve
for economiser and composite boiler.
Main Engine Camshaft Lube Oil Cooler
• It is a shell and tube type of heat exchanger in which lube oil is in shell and tubes are
carrying LT water for cooling of lube oil.
• Nowadays cooling medium is freshwater to avoid the scale formation and corrosion of
tubes. i.e. it reduces overall maintenance.
• Lube oil come to this cooler after the lubricating cams of the camshaft.
• At a time, 1 tonne of camshaft lube oil is in continuous circulation.
Main Engine Lube Oil Cooler
• It is a shell and tube type of heat exchanger in which lube oil in shell and tubes are
carrying LT water for cooling of lube oil.
Bilge Primary Tank
• It is a bilge primary tank of capacity 1 tonne which holds the majority of oil particles.
• Oil and water mixture comes to a primary tank from a bilge holding tank of capacity 30
tonnes.
• And from the primary tank, the oil and water mixture heat with the help of steam heater,
then most of the oil goes to oily bilge tank and rest of the mixture (mostly contain
water) goes to oily water separator with the help of a bilge pump.
Stuffing Box Lube Oil Settling Tank
• Generally, if you are working for the management company, then this lube oil is
transferred to stuffing box lube oil settling tank where the lube oil is heated with the
help of steam heater and lighter phase can be further used for batch purification by
purifying it
Main Engine Side Operating Console
• It is an operating console for the main engine in case of failure of main engine control
from a bridge and main engine control from the engine control room.
Scavenge Air Manifold
It is a manifold which stores scavenge air and supply it to the engine cylinder for proper
combustion.

The scavenge air enters through the scavenge ports in the lower part of the cylinder liner.

The exhaust gas is expelled through the centrally mounted exhaust valve in the cylinder
cover.
Main Engine Auxiliary Blower
• In a two-stroke diesel, electrically-driven auxiliary blowers are usually provided
because the exhaust gas-driven turbocharger cannot provide enough air at low engine
speed.
Main Engine Upper Crankcase
• A crankcase is a housing for the crankshaft in a reciprocating marine diesel engine.
• The enclosure forms the largest cavity in the engine and is located below the
cylinder(s), which is a multi-cylinder engine, usually integrated into one or several
cylinder blocks.
Main Engine Scavenge Air Cooler
• The number of scavenge air cooler is equal to the number of turbochargers mounted on
the main engine.
• The cylinder of the main engine is supplied with the scavenge air from one or more
turbochargers.
Oil Mist Detector
• Oil mist detector is a device which is constantly monitoring the oil mist concentration
in the main engine crankcase of each unit.
Engine Room Deck 4
COPT Condensate Pumps
• Two pumps are provided out of which one pump is running continuously and the other
one is kept on standby.
• Type of Pumps – Vertically mounted centrifugal pumps.
• It takes suction from the COPT condenser and pumps it to the hot well and in the hot
well that condensate is used to increase the temperature of distilled water and then
supplied as feed water to the boiler
Fuel Oil Transfer Pump
• The motor of this pump is on the 4th deck and the actual pump is located in bilges
below it.
• Type of Pump – Vertically mounted screw pump.
• Function – Transfer fuel oil from fuel oil wing tank to fuel oil service tank.
Diesel Oil Transfer Pumps
• The motor of this pump is on the 4th deck and the actual pump is located in bilges
below it.
• Type of Pump – It is a gear pump placed horizontally.
• Function – It transfers diesel oil from the diesel oil double bottom storage tank to diesel
oil settling tank.
COPT Condenser Sea Water Pump
• The motor of this pump is on the 4th deck and the actual pump is located in bilges
below it.
• Type of Pump – It is a centrifugal pump placed vertically.
• Function – It supplies seawater to COPT Condenser to cool down the condensate so that
this condensate can be supplied to hot well as feedwater.
Low Sea Suction Chest
• One sea suction chest is located on the port side and other is located on the starboard
side because even if the ships run aground, then also we can take suction from another
side.
Main Sea Water Pumps
• During engine room flooding, the water from bilge wells has to be pumped out so that it
recedes or remains static because if water comes out from the bilge well then that can
go into the motors located on the 4th deck and thus motors can be short-circuited.
Marine Growth Prevention System
• It is purely for preventing marine growth in sea chest and sea suction pipe.

• Marine growth will cause a reduction in handling the volume of the sea chest pipeline.
Fresh Water Generator Ejector Pump
• One pump is supplying seawater to the ejector of 1st freshwater generator (FWG 1) and
the other pump is supplying seawater to the ejector of 2nd freshwater generator (FWG
2).
Dedicated Low Sea Suction Chest For
Ejector Pump
• This chest supplies seawater only to the FWG ejector pump.No other pump gets
distribution from this chest. It is dedicated to FWG only.
Deck Seal Sea Water Pump and
Refrigeration Cooling Sea Water Pump
• It is a centrifugal pump and horizontally aligned.
• Deck seal is especially used in tankers (oil tankers).
• It is a part of an inert gas system.
• Before passing to the cargo tanks, the inert gas will pass through the deck seal,
which acts as a non-return valve & will prevent the backflow of inert gas into
the Engine Room Casing.
• This pump supplies the seawater to maintain the seal continuously.
• Deck seal is on the main deck, near the pump room.
• The refrigeration cooling seawater pump is used to supply the seawater to the
condenser of the refrigeration system present on ships.
Main Engine Air Cooler Cleaning Tank
(ACC9)
• The cleaning of the main engine scavenge air cooler is often being carried to the airside
of the cooler if it gets fouled.
• If the air side of the air cooler gets fouled then less amount of scavenging air will enter
the scavenge manifold and that is why cleaning is required at regular intervals.
• The chemical named ACC9 is used for this purpose.
Stern Tube Lube Oil Drain Tank
• From the bottom of the stern tube, a small pipe takes the lube oil to the drain tank. A
suction filter is also provided to filter the oil.

• From this tank, the oil is taken to the stern tube lube oil cooler where this oil is cooled
and then with the help of stern tube lube oil pumps (Gear Pumps) this oil is taken to the
stern tube lube oil high gravity tank.

• When the stern tube lube oil high gravity tank is overflown then that lube is taken to the
stern tube lube oil low gravity tank via a pipe by completely gravitational flow of lube
oil.
Stern Tube Forward Seal
• The only main function of stern tube lube oil forward seal is to prevent oil leakage into
the engine room.
Stuffing Box Lube Oil Drain Tank
• This tank is provided on deck 4 of engine room arrangement of ships.
• Dirty stuffing box lube oil goes to stuffing box lube oil drain tank but in case of
management companies, this oil goes to stuffing box lube oil settling tank where it is
heated, purified and can be reused.
• But in case of ownership companies this oil directly subjected to waste oil service tank.
Main Engine Scavenge Air Lube Oil Drain
Tank
The oil comes to this tank from under-piston space and basically, this oil is unburnt
cylinder lube oil and unburnt fuel oil ( if piston ring is leaking ).

This oil is directly subjected to the waste oil service tank with the help of a sludge pump.
Main Engine Lube Oil Pump
• Main engine lube oil pump is provided on deck 4 of engine room arrangement of ships.
• This is a vertically mounted pump whose impeller is inside the sump.
• This pump is used to transfer the lube oil to the purifier and then this oil is subjected to
the lube oil cooler and finally, this oil comes to the main engine for lubrication.
Sludge Pump
• Sludge Pump is provided on deck 4 of engine room arrangement of ships.
• For handling waste oil (sludge oil) from the various sludge tanks.
• It transfers waste oil to waste oil service tank so that the oil can be further taken to the
incinerator to burn.
• Example :- Oily bilge tank to waste oil service tank or purifier lube oil sludge tank to
waste oil service tank.
Bilge Pump
• It is mainly a reciprocating type of the pump.
• The main function of the bilge pump is to transfer bilge water to the bilge holding tank
and to the oily water separator.
Oily Water Separator With 15 PPM
Equipment
• The purpose of oily water separator is to remove the oil particles from the water.

• Bilge water is passed through the OWS where the oil particles in it are removed.

• The water with oil particles less than 15 PPM is then thrown overboard.

• Two Stage Oily Water Separators :- These contain two units – A separator unit and a
filtrating unit.
Main Engine Camshaft Lube Pump
• It is a gear pump and it is used to discharge the oil to the camshaft lube oil cooler.

• It takes the suction from the main engine camshaft lube oil drain tank.
Main Engine Camshaft Lube Oil Drain
Tank
• It has the capacity of 1000 to 2000 litres.

• Main engine camshaft lube oil pumps deliver lube oil to cam-case and exhaust valve
actuator pump.

• From there, a return line comes to this drain tank.

• Magnetic filters are provided in this line which takes the unwanted elements away.
Lube Oil Drain Tank
• This tank is provided on deck 4 of engine room arrangement of ships.
• Lube oil come to this tank from setting tank. i.e. the oil inside the lube oil drain tank is
a high phase oil (highly viscous oil). It has one steam heater.
• This oil can be reused in case of emergency. i.e. we can transfer this oil back to the
main engine after purification otherwise this oil is subjected to waste oil service tank.
Fuel Oil Drain Tank
• This tank is provided on deck 4 of engine room arrangement of ships.

• All the heavy fuel oil from settling tank come to this tank. i.e the oil inside the fuel oil
drain tank is a high phase oil (highly viscous oil) and this oil can be used in case of
emergency otherwise is subjected to waste oil service tank.
Air Condition Cooling Sea Water Pump
• This pump is provided on deck 4 of engine room arrangement of ships.

• This pump supplies seawater to the air conditioning unit for accommodation which is
located on accommodation deck 1.

• It is used in the condenser of the air conditioner.


IGS Scrubber Sea Water Pump
• Inert gas produced from the boiler goes to the scrubber tower before passing to cargo
holds.

• An Eductor (nozzle) is fitted on top of scrubber tower which sprays water on that inert
gas so that all the dirt and impurities settle down with water and only pure inert gas
goes up and is then supplied to cargo holds.

• This pump supplies that seawater to the eductor of scrubber tower.


High Sea Suction Chest
• In shallow water where the under-keel clearance is less, we use high sea suction chest
and when the ship is out at the ocean where the under-keel clearance of the ship is
more, we use low sea suction chest.
Fire General Service Pump & Fire Bilge
And Ballast Pump
• Fire pumps can be used to pump out the water in case of flooding because they have a
very high capacity of pumping
Crankcase Doors
• These doors are located on the port side of the main engine. By opening this door, you
are supposed to go inside the crankcase for overhauling. These doors are made of light
aluminum alloy and the hinged type and you are supposed to de-attach the hinge and
keep it aside.
• During overhauling, open the crankcase doors of all the units so that an adequate
amount of air can go inside and the person inside will not feel suffocated
Crankcase Relief Valve Door
• Crankcase relief valves must be fitted to all units and in case if oil mist detector fails to
detect the concentration of oil, then relief valve lifts so that high pressure can be
released and thus avoid the crankcase explosion.
• The valves allow the pressure of primary or minor explosion to be dissipated and
prevent possible rupturing of the casing.
• The valve instantly closes when the pressure drops and thus prevents the ingress of air,
eliminating the possibility of a major explosion.
Thrust Block
• This block is used to absorb the thrust which is producing by the propeller shaft and
linearly distributes the thrust to ship’s hull.

• Nowadays it is inside the crankcase so there is no need for separate lubrication. i.e.
lubrication of thrust block is done by main engine lube oil system
Flywheel
• A flywheel is a rotating mechanical device that is used to store rotational energy.
Flywheels have inertia called the moment of inertia and thus resist changes in rotational
speed. For example, flywheels are used in reciprocating engines because the energy
source, torque from the engine, is intermittent (occurring at irregular intervals).
Turning Gear Motor
• There are tooths present on the flywheel and tooths are engaged with turning gear motor
in order to rotate the flywheel in case of overhauling of the engine or at the starting of
the main engine.
