February 3, 1886- Rizal arrived in Heidelberg, a historical city in Germany famous for its old university and romantic surroundings Chess player’s club- a club wherein the students made Rizal as a chess player He worked at the University Eye Hospital under the direction of Dr. Otto Becker, distinguished German ophthalmologist RIZAL WROTE LETTERS TO HIS SISTERS MARIA AND TRINIDAD. IN HIS LETTERS HE DESCRIBED:
Germany- country of order and obedience
German students- respectful, affectionate, modest, and not boastful. German women- tall stout and blonde(physical)
- serious, studious, industrious, not afraid of man,
concerned about education, diligent. April 12, 1886- Rizal wrote a poem entitled, "A Los Flores Del Heidelberg"( to the flowers of heidelberg) inspired by the Neckar river teeming with flowers SUMMER VACATION IN WILHELMSFELD Wilhelmsfeld- mountainous village in Heidelberg. Dr. Karl Ulmer- a pastor of vicarage in Wilhelmsfeld. His wife greatly admire Rizal. June 2, 1886- Rizal retured to Heidelberg remembering the hospitality and friendship accorded to him by the Ulmers. The house where Rizal stayed for two weeks in Wilhelmsfeld, Germany in 1886. He finished writing the Noli me tangere here. He stayed with the Protestant pastor Karl Ullmer and his family. RIZAL STATUE IN GERMANY Rizal appreciated so much from his stay in the German village— the religious tolerance the people practice in the area. August 9, 1886- Rizal left Heidelberg August 14, 1886- boarded by a train. Rizal arrived in Leipzig Prof. Friedrich Ratzel- well known German historian. Dr. Hans Meyer- famous German anthropologist. Rizal translated Schiller’s William Tell into Tagalog for the Filipinos to be aware of the story of the champion of Swiss independence. He also translated the fairy tales written by Hans Christian Andersen for the benefit of his young nieces and nephews in the Philippines. He worked as a proofreader in a publishing company to augment his allowance. He was accepted because of his knowledge of German, Spanish, and other European languages. He stayed for two months because of the lower cost of living in Leipzig. Oct. 29, 1886- He left Leipzig and went to Dresden, where he met Dr. Adolph Meyer. After 3 days he left Dresden and went to Berlin by train. RIZAL IN BERLIN Nov. 1, 1886- Rizal arrived in Berlin. Fortunate enough he met Dr. Feodor Jagor in person( author of the book Travels of the Philippines) Dr. Rudolf Virchow- famous German anthropologist who was then the president of the Anthropological Society of Berlin Dr. Joest- a famous German geographer Dr. Karl Ernest Schweigger- a noted German ophthalmologist.
