Production Planning and

Control
Meaning of Production Planning
 Production is defined as “manufacturing goods
and services” and planning is defined as “the
series of related and coordinated activities such as
material control, process planning, scheduling
etc. designed to systematize in advance the
manufacturing efforts.
 Production planning, therefore, is the
predetermination of manufacturing requirements
such as men, materials, machines, manufacturing
process, money, order priority etc. for the
production of goods of the right quality, in the
right quantities and at the right time.
Meaning of Control
 Control is to review the work progress,
make corrections wherever required
thereby ensure that programmed
production takes place.
Definition of Production
Planning and Control
 Production planning and control is the process
of planning production in advance, setting rate
of each item, fixing starting and finishing dates
for each item, authorizing shop activity by
release of production orders, follow up the
progress of products and expediting wherever
required.
Production Planning versus Production Control
Planning Control
(Planning the work) (Working the plan)
 Creation, collection and  Distribution of data
maintenance of data
 Seeing the requirements  Requirements are actually
made available
 Preparation of load charts  Actual observation of jobs
 Preparation of all forms  Actual issue of forms
 Designing suitable  Keeping track of what is
feedback mechanism actually happening
 Forward thinking  Suggesting remedial action
Objectives of PPC
 Plan systematically

 To make available all resources

 Scheduling of activities

 Coordination

 Delivery commitments

 Overcome difficulties
Compulsory Functions of PPC
 Order preparation
 Materials control
 Process planning or Routing
 Tools control
 Scheduling
 Expediting
 Packaging
 Dispatching
Optional Functions of PPC
 Cost estimation

 Work measurement

 Sub contracting

 Capacity planning

 Demand forecasting
