The southern
cassowary is native
to Australia, eastern
Indonesia and Papua
New Guinea.
Description

The southern cassowary has a large,


horn-like helmet, called a casque,
which is soft in the middle. It is useful
when pushing through dense
rainforest leaves and develops at the
age of 1 or 2 years. Weighing 76
kilograms, females are heavier than
males and can grow up to 2 meters in
height. Males weigh about 55
kilograms.

Cassuary feed mainly on fallen fruits


and mushrooms. Sometimes they
also feed on small animals such as
snails and fish.
