The Cassowary

Cassuarius cassuarius
The Cassowary is a large flightless bird that lives in the dense tropical
rainforests of Northern Queensland and Papua New Guinea.
They have black feathers on its body with a blue featherless head with a
blunt horn on the top of the head. They also have a small thin beak.
These birds are very shy and are normally rarely seen in the wild, but
however, as humans move further into their fragmented habitat, adult
birds will often attack to protect their young. This has earned them the
title of the worlds most dangerous bird.
The Cassowary relies on a diet of fruit and insects. They spread seeds
throughout the forest in their droppings.
The chicks striped bodies help them to camouflage in the dappled
rainforest light. In times of danger, they hide under the male.
Unlike most other birds, male cassowaries raise their young.
