Project-Crime

Drug trafficking
Drug trafficking - trafficking in illicit drugs
(such as heroin, cocaine, opium, hashish), i.e.
y. without the permission of the competent
authority. Part of the shadow economy. Crime.
When did it first appear in the world:
year, country?
The established trade that began in the 1960s involved Peru, Bolivia, Colombia,
Venezuela and Cuba. Peasant farmers produced coca paste in Peru and Bolivia,
while Colombian smugglers would process the coca paste into cocaine in
Colombia, and trafficked product through Cuba.

Why Do People Like Drugs?

• We have evolved a brain that allows us to see, hear, taste, move, think,
etc., and also to repeat things that feel good. That happens because a
part of our brain sends out feel-good signals when we do something
we enjoy, like eating good food, playing a video game, kicking a goal
in soccer, listening to our favorite music, or going upside-down on a
roller coaster. The system that says to us, "Hey, that was good, do it
again!" is called the "reward system."
• Turns out that alcohol and drugs affect this system really well; they
are effective at going right to our brain's "reward system" and putting
it into high gear.
• This very effective stimulation of the reward system is why many
people can become addicted to drugs, since feeling good is what
drives much of our behavior. Drugs, in a sense, trick the system that
has evolved for helping us in our world and instead can turn our world
upside down.
• As a scientist and Division Director at NIDA, I'm committed to
learning more about how drugs exert their effects in the brain so that
we can come up with better ways to prevent young people from
getting "tricked" by drugs and sliding into addiction without even
realizing it.
Punishment for drug
trafficking

• Drug trafficking convictions, even for first time

offenders, typically result in prison sentences
that last over a year. A conviction for trafficking
can easily result in a prison sentence of 10 years
or more, though some states have significantly
higher penalties than others.
Latest/biggest crimes in
human history

• At current levels, world heroin consumption

(340 tons) and seizures represent an annual flow
of 430-450 tons of heroin into the global heroin
market. Of that total, opium from Myanmar and
the Lao People's Democratic Republic yields
some 50 tons, while the rest, some 380 tons of
heroin and morphine, is produced exclusively
from Afghan opium. While approximately 5 tons
are consumed and seized in Afghanistan, the
remaining bulk of 375 tons is trafficked
worldwide via routes flowing into and through
the countries neighbouring Afghanistan.
Some facts about
drug trafficking

• There were 9.6% fewer drug

trafficking offenders in fiscal year
2013 than in fiscal year 2012. Despite
this reduction, drug trafficking
offenses accounted for 30.4% of all
offenses in fiscal year 2013. The drug
types most often involved in these
offenses were powder cocaine,
methamphetamine, and marijuana.
The reason, why
did you choose this
crime?
• I chose it because it is very easy to
find information, very easy to
describe everything and the work got
quite creative.
