What is “definition”?
DEFINITION
- A definition is a statement that clearly,
completely, and precisely explains and/or
describes the meaning of a word or phrase.

- In the English language, a word can have


multiple meanings depending on how it is used
and the context in which it is used.

TECHNICAL DEFINITION
- It describes and explains the meaning of a word or phrase based on the general
references and other fields of study resources.

- It gives the universal meaning of the term.

- The definition comes from different reference materials such as dictionaries,


encyclopedias, books, journals, and even websites.

1. Be accurate. Use precise terms.
Examples:

Weak definition: Data is information in digital form that can be transmitted or processed.

Accurate and precise definition: Data are the quantities, characters, or symbols on which
operations are performed by a computer, being stored, and transmitted in the form of electrical
signals and recorded on magnetic, optical, or mechanical recording media.

2. Be objective. Use facts, not opinions.
Examples:

Opinionated definition: A questionnaire is not valid and reliable for the study.

Factual definition: A questionnaire is a set of printed or written questions with a choice of


answers, devised for the purposes of a survey or statistical study.

readers.
Examples:

Complex and complicated definition: Research is a systematic investigation into and study of
materials and sources in order to establish facts and reach new conclusions.

- It states and expresses the meaning of a word or phrase based on the specific
context.

- It refers to the specific definition of a concept.

- In research, the researcher is the one who formulates the meaning of the term
which is objectively anchored on the technical definition.

- It commonly uses the phrase “As used in this study”


OPERATIONAL DEFINITION
Example:

1. Items – number of people correctly solving a group performance task.

2. Social media traction – a volume of people endorsing, commenting on, or sharing


content on social media.

3. Public deliberation – hearings, speeches, press statements, and other forms of


deliberated among policy-makers or opinion.

Examples:
