Technical terms in research are words that you rarely read or heard unless you are
to start with your research paper writing. Getting familiar with several
terminologies are of great help for you might also encounter them in the next step
of your learning.
The technical terms that you encountered are words that explain about
research concept. It has a specific meaning only intended for its purpose.
These terms are essential part of all technical and scientific writing. This
is also often thought of as shorthand, a way of gaining great depth and accuracy
of meaning.

The term RESEARCH means “The attempt to derive generalizable new

knowledge by addressing clearly defined questions with systematic and
rigorous methods”.

PARTS OF THE INTRODUCTION

Statement of the problem - part of the research paper that enumerates the
research questions. It is used in research work as a claim that outlines the
problem addressed by a study.
Significance of the study - identifies the beneficiaries of the research and how
they will benefit from it. It is written as part of the introduction section of a
thesis. It provides details to the reader on how the study will contribute such as
what the study will contribute and who will benefit from it. It also includes an
explanation of the work's importance as well as its potential benefits.
Thesis Statement - one sentence that expresses the main idea of a
research paper. It focuses your ideas into one or two sentences. It should present
the topic of your paper and also make a comment about your position in relation
to the topic. Your thesis statement should tell your reader what the paper is about
and also help guide your writing and keep your argument focused.
BASIC PARTS OF RESEARCH
Introduction - leads the reader from a general subject area to a particular topic of
inquiry. It establishes the scope, context, and significance of the research being
conducted by summarizing current understanding and background information
about the topic, stating the purpose of the work in the form of the research
problem supported by a hypothesis or a set of questions, explaining briefly the
methodological approach used to examine the research problem, highlighting the
potential outcomes your study can reveal, and outlining the remaining structure
and organization of the paper.

Review of Related Literature- summarizes the previous findings about the

research topic and identifies the gaps in the literature. It is a detailed review of
existing literature related to the topic of a thesis or dissertation. In an RRL, you
talk about knowledge and findings from existing literature relevant to your topic.
Methodology- identifies the design, sample, instrument and procedures that will
be used in research. It is the specific procedures or techniques used to identify,
select, process, and analyze information about a topic. In a research paper, the
methodology section allows the reader to critically evaluate a study’s overall
validity and reliability. The methodology section answers two main questions:
How was the data collected or generated? How was it analyzed?
Analysis- involves examining and processing research data, in order to answer
the questions that the study is trying to address. It involves identifying patterns
and drawing out the main themes, and is often done with specialist computer
software.
Conclusion- is intended to help the reader understand why your research should
matter to them after they have finished reading the paper. A conclusion is not
merely a summary of your points or a re-statement of your research problem but
a synthesis of key points.
DATA GATHERING
Questionnaires - a prepared set of written questions used to obtain
information from research participants.
Interviewing- is a controversial practice where knowledge is produced through
the interaction between an interviewer and an interviewee or a group of
interviewees.
Survey - A study measuring the distribution of some characteristic(s) in a
population at a particular point in time.
Respondents - those persons who have been invited to participate in a particular
study and have actually taken part in the study.
REFERENCES
Primary Sources provide direct or first-hand evidence. These are anything that
gives you direct evidence about people, events or phenomena. It is also a piece of
evidence created by someone at the time of the event.
Examples: autobiographies, memoirs, diaries, personal letters, photographs, audio
recordings, statistical data
Secondary Sources describe, discuss, interpret, comment upon, analyze,
evaluate, process primary sources.
Examples: biographies, dictionaries, encyclopedias, news articles, movie reviews
OTHER IMPORTANT TERMINOLOGIES
Research question - a question that a research project sets out to answer. It helps
writers focus their research by providing a path through the research and writing
process. The specificity of a well-developed research question helps writers avoid
the “all-about” paper and work toward supporting a specific, arguable thesis.
Interview Guide- summarizes the content that researchers cover during
interviews.
Outline- a formal system used to develop a framework for thinking about what
the organization and eventual contents of your paper should be.

Abstract- a brief summary of a research study and its results. It should tell you
why the study was done, how the researchers went about it and what they found.
References- are lists of primary and secondary sources used in research. It lists
all the sources you've used in your project, so readers can easily find what you've
cited.
Bibliography- lists of works (such as books and articles) written on a
particular subject or by a particular author.  It can also be referred to as a list of
works cited. It is usually found at the end of a book, article or
research paper.
APA- (American Psychological Association) style that is commonly used to cite
sources within the social sciences.
