PRACTICAL WORKS IN TIE AND DYE
By
Ms. Chiamaka Dikenta
Lesson Objectives:
At the end of the lesson, the students should
be able to:
1. Discuss the meaning of Tie and Dye
2. State materials and tools used for tie-dye
3. Create at least one signature design/method
for their tie-dye craft
4. Design and dye fabrics using their signature
design and any other basic design
2
Meaning of Tie & Dye?
First thing to bear in mind is that there is limitless ways of
tying fabric to create beautiful patterns for tie-dye craft.

Tie-dye, commonly called tie and dye is the process of tying and
dyeing a fabric with the intention of creating various beautiful
designs or patterns on the fabric. Tie and dye is typically
brightly coloured and is made by tying the parts of the fabric
not to be coloured with ropes, twine or raffia. The tying
prevents or resists the dye from penetrating into the tied
3
MATERIALS AND TOOLS USED FOR TIE-DYE
1. Dye pigments
2. Fabric
3. Chemicals (Caustic soda, Hydrosulphite) – They
are used to enhance the fixation of the dye to
the fabric
4. Rubber hand gloves – to protect the hands
from chemical irritation and permanent dye
staining. 4
MATERIALS AND TOOLS USED FOR TIE-DYE
5. Plastic bowls – for mixing the dye solutions
6. Wooden stick – for stirring the dye bath
during its preparation
7. Thread, Rubber banks or raffia – for tying the
fabric
8. Nose masks – to protect the body from
inhalation of chemical fumes from the dyeing
processes. 5
METHODS OF TYING
1. Tying method
2. Clamping method
3. Folding method
4. Marbling method
5. Stitching method
6
TYING METHOD:
This method is also called
circular tying. The fabric is
tied at random intervals
around the object for the
design using twine. The tied
fabric is then dyed in the
dye bath and allowed to dry
up. The tied part forms
multiple circles of different
sizes.
7
CLAMPING METHOD:
This technique starts with folding
the fabric to be dyed in accordion
style. (This is the kind of pleating
seen mostly with paper hand-fan).
The flat wood is used to hold or
clamp the folded fabric in
opposite angles. It is dyed and the
clamped section creates a resist
repeated pattern.
8
FOLDING METHOD:
In this technique, the fabric is
folded systematically in the
desired form. Accordion pleats
can also be formed at the start of
the folding. Next, the fabric is
ted at intervals using twines or
rubber bands, then dyed as
desired.
9
STITCHING METHOD:
In this method of tying
fabric for dyeing, a thread
is moved in and out of the
fabric. The stitched
portion is then pulled
together. The movement

solution from penetrating.
10
MARBLING METHOD:
The fabric here is evenly
spread over a resistant neat
surface. It is then casually
gathered together in a ball-
like shape. Then it is tied
together in no particular
order, then soaked in water
for a while and transferred
to the dye bath.
11
PREPARATION OF DYE BATH:
For some dyeing methods, there is no need
to prepare a dye bath as the dyeing process
do not require the entire dipping in of the
fabric into a dye solution. For other
methods that require complete immersion
of the fabric into a dye bath, the following
procedure is followed to prepare the dye
bath.
12
PREPARATION OF DYE BATH:
1. Heat water to a boiling point
2. Add one (1) tablespoonful of dye to a dry plastic
bowl
3. Add one (1) tablespoonful of caustic soda and
two (2) tablespoonful of hydrosulphite
4. Mix together using the wooden spatula/spoon
5. Carefully pour in the hot water and stir the
solution.
6. Leave to rest and cool a bit.
13
DYEING PROCESS:
1. Tie the cloth/fabric in the desired pattern/design
2. Soak in clean water for a few seconds, remove and allow to drip-dry a
bit. Ensure that the fabric remains at least damp. The dampness
allows for easier penetration of dye pigments.
3. Dip the damp fabric into the dye bath and allow to stay for a while.
In other cases that do not require complete immersion of the fabric
into the dye bath, sprinkle or drip the liquid dye to the areas of the
damp fabric you wish to dye.
4. Remove the fabric from the dye bath. Allow to drain.
5. Cut off the twine and spread to completely dry out.
6. Rinse the dyed fabric in clean water severally until water runs clear.
7. Dry the fabric completely and press out with hot iron. Starch if you
desire. 14
