BIOETHICAL
DILLEMA
It means that boethics concerns itself with addressing
ethical issues in healthcare, medicine, research,
biotechnology, and the environment. Typically these
issues are addressed from many different disciplines.
"SC REVERSES RULING ON BT
'TALONG' TEST"
Reading this article that talks about the Bioethical Dilemma
using GMOs or the Genetically modefied organisms where
last December the field testing of the controversial
genetically modified eggplants and assurance of new permit
has stopped by the decision of the supreme court. As the
proponents of BT talong created a petition for its
reconsideration to set aside the ruling on the ground that is
then granted by the high supreme court.
These said proponents are composed of the International
Service for the Acquisition of Agri-Biotech Application
Inc., Environmental Management Bureau, Crop Life
Philippines, University of the Philippines Los Banos
Foundation, and University of the Philippines. It is said
that the BT talong lacked commercial propagation,
implying that no guaranteed aftereffect was required to be
adjudicated.
1. WHAT ARE THE RELEVANT FACTS
OF THIS CASE?
• The decision that stopped the
testing and issuance of permits
concerning genetically modified
organisms were taken back by the
Supreme Court.
• The high court said that BT talong proponents
neither went beyond the field-testing phase nor
performed commercial distribution of the
product, and it has a lack of commercial
propagation • The threats to the health of the
public and to the environment is therefore an
allegation.
2. WHAT ARE SOME ETHICAL
QUESTIONS OR CONCERNS RAISED
IN THIS CASE?
• First ethical concern that was raised in this
case is that genetically modified organisms
shouldn’t be taken lightly.
• Second ethical concern is that before taking a
step to the next procedure, have first a permission
or supervision to the authorities that oversees the
process.
3. WHO ARE THE STAKEHOLDERS IN THIS
SITUATION? WHO IS AFFECTED BY THE DECISIONS
MADE?
The stakeholders under the article of SC reversed ruling on Bt talong test are
the farmers, local government constituents. The decision of the Supreme Court
last December to simultaneously ban the field testing of Bt talong and nullify
the existing government biosafety guidelines has dire implications for
scientific progress, and thus, economic development and welfare, raising very
serious concerns in the scientific community.
4. WHAT VALUES INFLUENCED THE
DECISION OF EACH GROUP OF
STAKEHOLDERS?
The Philippine Supreme Court has ruled that field testing of Bt
eggplant, a genetically modified crop, is not permitted. This
decision was widely publicized in the local press, forcing
scientists to defend their work. They used qualitative, inductive
analysis to look at how three news outlets covered the issue using
science.
We discovered that science is built on four themes science
seeks proof, absolute consensus must be reached, scientific
inquiry characteristics are used to discredit scientists, and
science is aware of its logical limits. These findings have
implications for public acceptance of new technologies.
5.WHAT ARE SOME POSSIBLE
ACTIONS AND THEIR
CONSEQUENCES?
One of the possible action is that the supreme court hasn't stop the
field testing of the controversial genetically modified eggplants and
issurance of new permit of GMO. As their consequences , There are
several concerns regarding the impact of GE Bt talong on the
environment including toxicity to biodiversity, including beneficial
insects, and a changes in the relative abundances of types of pests on
eggplant.
6. WHAT DO YOU CONSIDER TO BE
THE BEST ACTION AND WHY?
Field testing has stopped by the supreme court. Based from the
article about greenpeace , one of the allegation is that GMO gives a
negative impact in the environment which causes biodiversity loss,
has differences in nutritional content that causes problems in the
body of a person as its side effects. Thus, they must take further
tests in order for them to ensure the safety as farmers also can
benefit from the GMO because of the BT Corn.
Who are the people affected by the
halt of BT talong trials in the said
article and how are they being
affected?
