PRACTICAL 2 – ANIMAL KINGDOM II

AIM
The overall aim of this laboratory session is to observe the levels of
organization in the animal kingdom, make observations of the external and
internal features (where indicated) and classify selected examples of
invertebrate animals belonging to the phyla Cnidaria, Nematoda,
Platyhelminthes, Mollusca and Arthropoda.
LEARNING OBJECTIVES
• Observe characteristic features of the phyla with emphasis on symmetry,
number of tissue layers (diploblastic, triploblastic), body cavity (acoelomate,
coelomate) and key features typical of the class and the phylum.
• Compare key features between phyla studied.
• Record observations using biological drawings.
READINGS
• Biological Sciences 1&2: Chapter 2; pages 52-75
• Animal Diversity: Hickman and Roberts
• Handout 1
SPECIMENS
• - Cnidaria (Jellyfish)
• - Nematoda (Roundworm)
• - Platyhelminthes (Tapeworm and Liver fluke)
• - Mollusca (Chip Chip and Snail)
• - Arthropoda (Millipede)

Title:
Aim:
Introduction: this should be about a page long and include the following:
Background information on the different phylum being studied in the lab that is;
• Cnidaria
• Nematoda
• Platyhelminthes
• Mollusca
• Arthropoda
Introduction continued…
You can also do a brief comparison amongst the phylum in terms of how they
are similar and how they are different.
You should discuss each phyla in terms of symmetry, number of tissues
(diploblastic, triploblastic) and body cavity (coelomate or acoelomate)

For this lab Apparatus and Materials as well as Method is NOT required.
Results
Your results should consist of drawings of the 7 organisms reviewed during the
session. These include –
1. Cannon ball Jellyfish
2. Roundworm Ascaris
3. Tapeworm Taenia
4. Liver fluke Fasciola
5. Chip Chip
6. Snail
7. Millipede
Drawings should consist of title, labels, magnification and the key diagnostic features
each organism.
The key diagnostic features can be identified as annotations on the drawing or
separately in a paragraph under each drawing.
Results continued…
You are also required to identify the main characteristics of each phlya
observed today. This can be done in a table of similar format to last week’s
session.
