There was a symbiotic relationship
between Cebuano printed literature
and the rise of Cebuano journalism.
Mojares, 1975
La Justicia (1899)
● First Filipino newspaper published in
Cebu
● Founded by Matias de Arrieta and Vicente
Sotto*
● Short-lived because the American
military authorities found its views
subversive

*Vicente Sotto was known to be a fiery

controversial Cebuano known for his anti- Vicente Yap Sotto (1877-1950)
Church and anti-American stances. After the Father of Cebuano Letters
shutdown of La Justicia, Sotto published five
more papers which did not prosper also and
Ang Suga was the first periodical in Cebuano in 1901.
● Under the protective and guiding hands of Sotto, the

sugilanon was made to grow and bloom.

● For the first time, many Cebuano writers saw regular print in the

pages of Ang
Suga.
● The suligagming (narrative sketch) and the

pinadalagan (informal pieces in prose and poetry) were also

regularly printed.
● After the publications of Ang Suga, there was a mushrooming of
over a hundred periodicals from 1901-1940.
● Some favorite of the writers were: Babaye, Lungsoronan,
● Launching of the Bisaya - a
landmark in the development of
sugilanon

● Ug Gianod Ako (And I was

Drifted) - an example of a “plotless
modern story”

● Cebu Writers
