Problems in the Dataset
Balanced scorecard slide 9
Countries with all columns blank –
• Afghanistan, Bangladesh, Iran, Kuwait, Libya, Maldives, Mauritania, Pakistan, Saudi Arabia, Somalia. The
religion followed in the above countries is Islam. These countries are dominated by people mostly who
belong to the Muslim community. In the country itself alcohol is banned to the locals.
• Yemen – The country of Yemen has a been serving of 6 which is not valid as there is alcohol ban in the
country and this value should be taken to 0 and then the country should be removed from the list.
• Monaco – The country also has no recorded data as there is no excise tax on any entity like beer, wine, and
spirits.
• North Korea - The country has strict data protection laws and little of the data is released to the public and is
kept by the government.
• San Marino – The alcohol data seems to be not recorded by the country as it has no action plan on the
consumption as such.

There exist some countries where the consumption of a particular drink is mentioned as zero. The data of the drink in the
country might not be recorded as per the survey that have been conducted to record the dataset.
Beer – Cook Islands
Spirit – Algeria, Burundi, Equatorial Guinea, Gambia, Guinea, Laos, Nauru
Wine – Bhutan, Burundi, Eritrea, Euthopia, India, Indonesia, Iraq, Lesotho, Malaysia, Myanmar, Nepal, Rwanda, Sri Lanka,
Sudan, Tajikistan, Uganda. – It can also happen that the consumption of wine in these countries is very less resulting in the
value of 0.

Changes in the data
Balanced scorecard slide 9
Replacing the blank values of different columns –
The data contains some values to be blank in the different columns.
• Beer – Macedonia
• Spirit – Denmark
• Wine – Bahamas
The value of all these countries is replaced by the mean of the remaining values of the column in the dataset.

Reason to not remove the rows –

The data of certain countries mentioned before seem to be zero or is not recorded in that country. Removing those values or
replacing them would result in an effect on the comparison with the life expectancy of the different countries. The countries
with zero consumption hold and important point in order to check the life expectancy of these countries with respect to the
others.

3
Calculation of Total Alcohol (Liters)
Balanced scorecard slide 9
To calculate the alcohol consumption as per liters, we have considered the standard quantities of different serving as
mentioned in the article (
https://www.niaaa.nih.gov/alcohols-effects-health/overview-alcohol-consumption/what-standard-drink) based in the
National Institute of Alcohol Abuse.

According to the article, we calculated the total ounces of the different drinks that are given. A drink of beer contains
12 ounces, spirit has 1.5 ounces and wine has 5 ounces. This gives the total quantity of the drink.

After that we have multiplied the value with the percentages of alcohol to get the quantity of alcohol in each drink in
ounces.

After adding the different values, we have added them and then converted it into litres by multiplying the measure by
a value of 0.0295735 to get the consumption of different countries in litres.

For example, in any country the final formula comes to be

((Beer Drink*12*0.05)+(Spirit Drink*1.5*0.4)+(Wine Drink *5*0.12))*0.02957

alcohol.
5
Life Expectancy at birth
Balanced scorecard slide 8
The country of San Marino with no alcohol
consumption is one of the top countries with
high expectancy.

Angola who tends to have a high alcohol

consumption has less expectancy.

The countries in the low life expectancy have

lower alcohol consumption as compared to the
countries with high life expectancy.

6
Life Expectancy after 60

Japan again tops the list of highest life

expectancy after people turning 60.

Countries like Sierra Leone, Eritrea, Mali have

very low consumption but still have very low
life expectancy.

Monaco and San Marino are exceptions to the

top 10 list as their consumption is 0 and still
have high expectancy after 60 years of age..

7
Healthy Life Expectancy

Singapore, a different country has the highest

healthy life expectancy after being 10th in both
lists.

Central African Republic is the new country that

has a low healthy life with low alcohol
consumption.

We can say that the top and bottom 10 list gives us

a brief idea about the differences in consumption
and life expectancies.

8
Highest Alcohol Consumption
Balanced scorecard slide 3
Even after having the highest consumption
of alcohol, Andorra has a high life
expectancy of about 76.5 years, while
countries like Russia and Grenada have low
expectancy.

This explains that the life expectancy of

people around the world is less dependent on
alcohol and there can be other factors which
can determine it more accurately.

9
Countries with Alcohol Ban

The countries Kuwait, Saudi Arabia, Libya and

Maldives have Life Exp more than the average
may be due to better life services.

Somalia and Afghanistan has lowest

Expectancy as the countries are in Desert
regions and affected.

The countries with ban on alcohol seem to have a

distributed life expectancy with Kuwait being
best and Somalia worst.
