Gurukul System

The Gurukul was a type of school in ancient


education system.

The gurukul system is an ancient learning method.

Gurukulam has existed since the Vedic age.


Atlekar’s six aims of education in ancient
India

 Infusion of piety and religiousness


 Formation of character (use stories of national heros)
 Development of personality (self respect, self confidence)
 Inculcation of the civic and social duties
 Promotion of social efficiency and happiness
(specialization of work)
 Preservation and spread of national heritage and culture

‘Gu’ = Invisible, ‘Ru’ = ‘Visible’

Destroys the effect of bad karma

Eternal relationship

Responsible to attain ‘moksha’

Preserves the physical and mental well-being of the

Brahmacharya

Brahma: shortened for Brahmin, the absolute, eternal


supreme God-head

Charya: to follow
Brahmacharya

It is one of the four stages of life

It is an educational period of 14-20 years

Texts learned a. traditional Vedic sciences, religious


texts and Vedas and Upanishads
Vedas

Vedic mantras are divided into four books a. Rig Veda b.


Soma Veda c. Yajur Veda d. Atharva Veda

Composed in Vedic Sanskrit, the text constitutes the


oldest layer of Sanskrit literature and the oldest
scriptures in Hindu literature.
Methods of instructions

Three types of instructions,

1. Sravana 2. Manana 3. Nididhyasana

Sravana: listening to words uttered by the teacher

Manana: the process of deliberation or reflection of


the topic learned

Nididhyasana: represents the higher stage


Evaluation System

No direct methodology to assess the grades

Three grades (Yaskas and Sayana)

a. Maha Prazanan grade: Students of very high ability

b. Madhyama Prazanan grade: Students of high ability

c. Alpa Prazanan grade: Students of low ability
