Role Played by Gandhiji in the Freedom struggle relate
with Freedom struggles of Uttarakhand and Karnataka
(with reference to Chapter ‘Indigo’)

Gandhiji had played an important role in India’s Freedom struggle.


He employed non - violent resistance to lead the successful campaign of
India’s independence from British rule and to later inspire movements for
civil rights.When he was leading the nation towards its freedom, he had
toured along the length and breadth of the country to gather people’s
support. Freedom Fighters who were influenced by his work joined him
from different states of the country including Uttarakhand and Karnataka.
About Chapter ‘Indigo’ , Indigo Plant and Champaran Satyagraha :

Chapter ‘Indigo’ is about how Gandhiji struggled for the unpriviliged peasants of Champaran.
Gandhiji decided to fight against Injustice. He waged a war which lasted for a year to tackle the
discrimination and got justice for the peasants.

Indigo, the most beautiful and expensive of all natural dyes in common use, has has
always been closed associated with indigo, as it name implies. Before Indeptnden Independence, the country side of
Bengal and Bihar were the major areas of cultivuting cultivating Indigo.

Champaran Satyagraha was the first Satyagraha movement lead by Gandhiji


in India and is considered a historically important revolt in Indian Independence
Movement. It was a farmer’s uprising that took place in Champaran district of
Bihar, during the British colonial period.
