The Assessment Matrices

2018-2019
The Assessment Matrices
The purpose is to...
• give a general overview of the skills objectives
tested across levels in terms of mid and end-
of-level expectations as specified by the curriculum
document;
• provide guidance for all stakeholders (test writers,
course planners, teachers and students);
• ensure parallelism between exams within the level
and progression across levels;
• be transparent about what is tested in each exam.
The Assessment Matrix
• There are two versions of the Assessment Matrix
– the instructor version and the student version.
• It outlines what will be tested in CAT, ECA and
the PAE exam in terms of the four skills areas.
• It does not include the language objectives.

** The language objectives are specified in the

BUSEL Preparatory Program Curriculum Booklet.
It is expected that what is tested in the language
sections of ECAs will be a representative sample
of the objectives covered at each level.

Limitations
• Not every objective can be directly assessed through
standardised tests!
• Such objectives are still being assessed through the
domain of formative assessment.
• The skills objectives that cannot be tested through
CATs and ECAs have been categorised under
LEARNING PORTFOLIO (LP).
• Certain objectives cannot be tested even through
Learning Portfolio tasks! So, they have been
categorised under CLASSROOM DOMAIN (CD).
• If an objective does not appear at a level, the relevant
boxes are left blank.
