About the ESDP network

The European Spatial Development Planning network


(ESDP) is an international network of academics, scholars,
researchers and practitioners, which advocates and nurtures
education, research, professional training and development in
spatial planning and development around the world. The
network views spatial planning both as a process and an
agenda for change.

Intensive programme

 bring together graduate students within planning, urban


sociology, architecture, urban and regional economics and
geography from 15 European universities to examine an
ongoing project for urban transformation in Stockholm
 The IP provides an opportunity to meet students from
different European universities and discuss planning issues
within the framework of a project work.

Course description
Aim:
provide students with a learning experience enabling them to absorb
different planning contexts, to share and probe instruments and
approaches and to confront the problems and issues at hand.

Learning outcomes:
• A broad understanding of urban redevelopment through a critical,
multidisciplinary analysis of the main features of the proposed
development;
• The application of tools, methods and concepts to analyse the social,
economic and environmental implications of redevelopment projects at
various scales;
• Strategies for a sustainable urban development considering the specific
institutional, physical and societal context of the area in a local and
regional perspective.

Task:
critically assess the planning of Norra Djurgårdsstaden and
identify strategies, plans, measures etc that improve the
proposed development of the study area in terms of
sustainability

Themes:
 Sustainable urban design: concepts, images and
technologies for the development of an attractive,
environmentally friendly and accessible urban district.
 Social sustainability: understanding and managing the
social mixture of the area and encouraging social networks.
 Environmental sustainability: measures and strategies to
minimise impacts of the developed area on nature,
environment and climate.
 Economic viability: development of retail and services in a
local and regional context. Strategies for attracting investors
to develop the area as planned.

Indicative grading criteria

E  Submit a written report (50-70 pages) incl problem, aim, research


questions, method, analysis, discussion and conclusions.
 Oral presentation at the seminars on 11, 14 and 17 April
 Active participation in the group work
D Besides the demands for E the report contains a mediocre analysis of
the study and no relevant reflections on the literature that has been
studied.
C Besides the demands for a D the report contains a well-defined analysis
and discussion that support the conclusions of the study.
B Besides the demands for a C the report has a fully consistent structure
with a clear link between problem definition, aim, method and
outcomes.
A Besides the demands for a B report includes innovative ideas based on a
comprehensive analysis and discussion of the study area and relevant
literature.
