DAILY LIFE USES OF A P-BLOCK
ELEMENT
CHLORINE INTRODUCTION

 Chlorine is a chemical element with the symbol Cl

and atomic number 17.
 The second-lightest of the halogens, it appears
between fluorine and bromine in the periodic table.
 It’s properties are mostly intermediate between
them.
 Chlorine is a yellow-green gas at room temperature.
 It is an extremely reactive element and a strong
oxidizing agent among the elements.
Uses Of Chlorine:-
1. It is used to get rid of the smell of putrefaction.
2. It is used as a disinfectant.
3. Chlorine is used in the treatment of drinking water
to kill bacteria.
4. It is used to clean swimming pools.
5. It is used in the production of paper and paper
products.
6. It is used as an antiseptic.
7. It is used to produce drugs.
(1)Purification of water
• Chlorination is the process of
adding chlorine to drinking
water to kill parasites,
bacteria, and viruses.

• Using or drinking water with

small amounts of chlorine
does not cause harmful health
effects and provides
protection against waterborne
disease outbreaks.
(2)Manufacturing of bleach

In case of oxidative bleaching, chlorine is the

basis for commonly used bleaching agents like
sodium hypochlorite, bleaching powder and
sodium chlorite.

The reducing agent based bleaching agents

comprise of sodium dithionite or sodium
hydrosulfite, sodium thiosulphate and sulfonic
acid derivatives.
(3)Making paper

 Chlorine is used to give paper its

white appearance and to remove
"lignin,“.
 Lignin is an element of wood fiber that
yellows paper when exposed to
sunlight (as occurs with newsprint).
(4)Used for making PVC pipe
The basic raw materials for PVC are derived
from salt and oil.
Chlorine is manufactured by the electrolysis of
sodium chloride, salt.
This is why the first PVC manufacturing plants
were located close to natural sources of salt.
The electrolysis of salt water produces
chlorine.
(5)Chlorine used as a
Disinfectant

Chlorine is one of the most

commonly used disinfectants
for water disinfection.
Chlorine can be applied for
the deactivation of most
microorganisms and it is
relatively cheap.
(6)Chlorine used for medicines
Pharmaceuticals: Chlorine is used in the manufacture of various
drugs including those used to treat
 Diabetes
 high blood pressure
 high cholesterol
 Asthma
 Seizures
 cancer and
 depression.

Around 85 percent of pharmaceutical drugs use chlorine or chlorinated

compounds during drug manufacture.
(7)Chlorine used in Industries
 Chlorine also has a multitude of industrial uses.

 Including making bulk materials like bleached

paper products, plastics such as PVC and the
solvents tetra-chloromethane, chloroform and
dichloromethane.

 It is also used to make dyes, textiles, medicines,

antiseptics, insecticides and paints.
