Warm-up Exercise • Make the sound fffff, and keep it
going for a count of five.

• Now make the sound vvvvv, and

keep it going for a count of five.

• Now alternate these two:

fffffvvvvvfffffvvvvv.
Voiceless
Sounds are voiceless when the vocal chords
are apart so that air flows freely through the
glottis into the oral cavity. [p] and [s] in super
[supər] are two of the several voiceless sounds
of English.
Voiced
If the vocal cords are together, the airstream
forces its way through and causes them to
vibrate. Such sounds are voiced. [b] and [z] in
buzz [bʌz] are two of the many voiced sounds
of English.
