CHAPTER 11
NUMERICAL EXPRESSION

A NUMERICAL EXPRESSION is an
expressional that combines numbers and one or
more operations symbols.
VARRIABLE

A VARIABLE is any letter or symbol

that represent a number.
n+5
x-7
w - 25
CONSTANT

A CONSTANT has a fixed value

that does not change.
COEFFICIENT

A COEFFICIENT is a number
multiplied or divided by variable.

6x + 5
coefficient constant

variable
ALGEBRAIC EXPRESSION

An ALGEBRAIC EXPRESSION

is a mathematical phrase that uses
variables, numerals and operation
symbols.
Term

A TERM is a part of an expression that

are added or subtracted.
5x + 6 – 4x
Like Term

A LIKE TERM are terms who

have the same variable raised to the
same power.
5x + 6 – 4x
Types of Algebraic Expression

1.Monomial Expression
2.Binomial Expression
3.Polynomial Expression
1. Monomial Expression

An algebraic expression which having only one

term is known as monomial.
Example:
3, 3xy, 3x, 8y etc.
2. Binomial Expression

A binomial expression is an algebraic

expression two terms, which are unlike
term,
Example:
5xy + 8, zxy +, etc.
3. Polynomial Expression

More than one terms with non- negative integral

exponents of variable is known as polynomial.
Example:
ax + by +ca, +2x +3, etc
Expression

Is a mathematical phrase which combines

numbers, variables and operators to show
the value of something.
Equation

An equation is mathematical statement

where in the two expressions are set of
equal to each other.

Answer

1.The sum of y and six is sixteen

2.The difference of x and three is eleven
3.The product of five and m is twenty
4.The quotient of h and three is four
5.The product five of m
Solving Algebraic Expresson

Evaluate the following:

1. x + 7 ; for x = 3
2. 3x – 5 ; for x =10
3. 4x + 2y ; for x = -4, y = 3
4. + 2x ; for x = 3
5. ; for x = 5 , y = -5
Solution:

1.x + 7 ; for x = 3
= (3) + 7
=3+7
= 10
Solution:

2. 3x – 5 ; for x =10
= 3(10) – 5
= 30 -5
= 25
Solution:

3. 4x + 2y ; for x = -4, y = 3
= 4(-4) + 2(3)
= -16 + 6
= -10
Solution:

4. + 2x ; for x = 3
= + 2(3)
=9+6
= 15
Solution:

5. ; for x = 5 , y = -5

= =3
Try this!

1. 2x +11y – z ; for x = 8, y = 2, z = 20
2. - ; for x = -3
3. for x = -1, y = -5, z = 6
Solution:

1. 2x +11y – z ; for x = 8, y = 2, z = 20
= 2(8) + 11(2) –(20)
=16 + 22 – 20
= 38 – 20
= 18
2. - ; for x = -3
=3-4
= 3 (9) – 4(-27)
= 27 + 108
= 135
