Hypothesis led learning
Learning Objectives

To identify the best chocolate (C)

To describe why it is the best chocolate (B)

To evaluate the evidence for the best

chocolate (A)

How you do it
• Scan the evidence to research the
arguments for and against the hypothesis
• Take down notes to help you phrase your
argument
• Create your own newspaper article
• Present your argument

Applying Your Knowledge
• Create a news article –
• Use your hypothesis as your Headline
• In your article discuss your findings and
what you have concluded.

• Be creative, you can make your own

background.
How did you do?
• Use your grading grid to level the
other groups.
• They will then feedback how you did
• Complete how to improve section on
sheets and stick into exercise book
Plenary
• What is a hypothesis?

• How can you be sure that Galaxy is the

best chocolate?

• Do your findings support your hypothesis?

The science bit..........
• Scientist concluded that the early atmosphere
contained very little oxygen, large amounts of
carbon dioxide and water vapour.
• Relied on evidence.
• Rock formed during early times.
• For example iron is very reactive with oxygen,
so iron based rock formed in a particular
period indicates how much oxygen was
around at that time.
Carbon dioxide and temperature

Carbon
Over millions of years the carbon cycle Dioxide
has maintained a constant, low Year (ppm)
percentage (approx. 0.03%) of carbon 1979 333.68
dioxide in the atmosphere. 1980 335.55
1981 337.14
In 1860, the CO2 level was about 289 1982 338.38
ppm (parts per million). 1983 340.25
1984 341.82
Here is a table showing the CO2 levels 1985 343.18
over a recent 10 year period. 1986 344.26
1987 345.99
1988 347.96

What percentage change is this and does it matter?

Is evidence reliable?
• To recall the definition of a hypothesis (C)

• To describe evidence that has been used

to support a hypothesis (B)

• To explain why it is difficult for scientists to

be precise (A)
Greenhouse effect
From air trapped in Antarctic ice, we have a good idea of
CO2 concentrations going back 160,000 years.

We also know the temperatures over the same period.

The very warm interglacial period of 130,000 years ago was accompanied by CO2
levels of around 300 ppm.
The previous great Ice Age had CO2 levels around 200 ppm.

300ppm

Why can’t scientist be precise?
Scientist 1 – The
evidence from this
rock dates back
160,000 years

Scientist 2-We don’t

have enough
evidence to date this
type of rock

Scientist 3 – This
evidence dates back
250,0000 years

What will scientists do regarding the middle rock type?

Creating the Oceans
It is hypothesized that water vapor escaping from the interior of the
Earth via countless volcanic eruptions created the oceans (this
took hundreds of millions of years)
Creating the Oceans
Astronomers also hypothesize
that comets impacting the
Earth were a major source of
water that contributed to
creation of the oceans
Remember, that comets are
best described as “dirty ice
balls”
