This Manual will talk about the LGBTQ+

Community and Bust Myths surrounding them

L G B T Q
About the LGBTQ+ community:

• The word LGBTQ+ stands for lesbian, gay, bisexual, transgender, queer. The plus sign denotes the
existence of more gender identities.

• Over the past decade, individuals hailing from the LGBTQ+ community have gained more recognition
and acceptance within the Indian society, both socially and politically.

• Transpeople were accepted in ancient India and referred to by terms like "tritya prakriti"
Do’s
• Most times, especially trans people, may not be able to use gendered bathrooms. One of the best ways to  overcome this
problem is by encouraging the construction of gender inclusive bathrooms in your area or community.

• Whichever term a person decides to use to describe their gender identity, (whether that’s transgender, queer etc,) it is
imperative to respect them and use that term for them.

• One of the most important factors to weigh in while communicating with individuals from the LGBTQ+ community is
their pronouns. It is important to use their preferred pronouns as using the wrong ones intentionally can be very hurtful
and disrespectful.
Don'ts
• One's identity is a very personal thing, it is imperative to avoid asking questions such as, "Are you sure?", as these
questions symbolize doubt. We must be mindful of not casting this doubt upon one's gender identity.

• The idea that there needs to be a man or a woman in a relationship is reductive and heteronormative, as well it
perpetuates sexist gender norms. It is crucial that one educates themselves about the concerns surrounding this area.
We should not impose such ideas upon people from LGBTQ+ communities and otherwise as well.

• We should work towards making society a more inclusive space. We must not treat people from the LGBTQ+ community
any differently as it brews inequalities and makes individuals feel excluded.
