• Alagappa University was established in the year 1985 with four departments. Tamil
Department was the first among the four. This department offered degrees like Post
Graduate(M.A.,) Master of Philosophy(M.Phil.,),Doctrate(Ph.D) and Post Doctorate
(PDF) are offered as full time courses. Post Graduate course in Temple Arts is also
offered. Also Summer Sequential Programme in M.Phil Tamil is functioning
successfully.
• Professor Dr. K. Sivagurunathan was the first Head of the Department of Tamil. Prof.
Dr. A. Viswanathan, Dr. Prof. T. Chockalingam, Prof. Dr. R. Subramanian worked as
Heads of the Department as the Department is Headed by Prof.Dr.M.Pandi, followed
Prof.D.S.Rajaram, Mr.M.Natesan, and Asst. professors Dr.M.Sutha and Dr.S.Suresh .
Central Institute of Indian Language (CIIL) in Mysore in conducting language training
to the Sivaganga, Ramnad and Viruthunagar District, teachers. The University entered
into Memorandum of Understanding through RFU and NTS and CHL.
Department of Industrial Chemistry
Objectives:
To conceive and conduct programmes in Industrial Chemistry at Post-graduate and M.Phil.
levels to train manpower for the Academic and Research institutions and Chemical
Industries.
To carry out Basic, Applied and Advanced Research in various fields of Chemistry.
To associate with institutions and industries in a meaningful way to transfer technology and
To render consultancy and testing services to the industries.
Vision and Mission:
To conduct world-class Master and Research programmes in Industrial Chemistry and
To carry out Advanced Research in different areas of Chemistry.
The Department of Industrial Chemistry, one of the prime Departments of the University,
was established in 1985. It offers M.Sc., M.Phil., and Ph.D. in Chemistry, and M. Phil.
Chemistry (Week-End) programme
Biotechnology Department
The Department of Biotechnology was established in the year 2002. The Department offers a two
year M. Sc., Degree Programme in Biotechnology and a Doctoral Programme leading to Ph.D.
in Biotechnology from the Academic year 2002 - 2003. With the full financial support of
DBT, Govt. of India, a One Year Post M. Sc., Advanced Diploma Course in Molecular
Diagnostics was offered during the period 2008-2013. DBT, Govt. of India has extended
financial support for strengthening of laboratory equipment to be utilized for M. Sc.,
Biotechnology teaching in 2009. Department of Science and Technology (DST), Council of
Scientific and Industrial Research (CSIR), Indian Council of Medical Research (ICMR),
University Grants Commission (UGC), Dredging Corporation of India (DCI) and Atomic
Energy Regulatory Board (AERB-CSRP) independently as well as in collaboration with many
National Institutes/Universities. The Department is also carrying out collaborative research
projects sponsored by the industries such as ITC Life Sciences & Technology Centre (ITC
LSTC), Bangalore and Tablets India Limited (TIL), Chennai. of India for getting the first,
third and third positions in the category of BIF (Universities).
Department of Oceanography & Coastel Area
Studies
The perception of whole world is moving around to ocean to utilize the living or nonliving
resources and depends to nuclear disposal, defense blockade, satellite and astronauts
landing. Ocean is also considered to be the important source for the future livelihood of
human being. For to India concern, it encircled in three sides with much exploitation
both living and non- living resources. But Tamilnadu exists a part in coastal stretch
bestowed with Strait, Back waters, Estuarine habitats and two major ports. In addition to
the port development, the possibilities of 4th international canal, connecting the oceans,
namely Sethu Samudram, the study of Oceanography is warranted for recent years.
The Department of Oceanography and Coastal Area Studies is the only one of its kind in
Tamil Nadu and it was established in the year 1998 to cater the need of manpower in the
field of marine research, technology and industries. It is situated in a satellite campus of
13 acres at Thondi about 60 km. away from the main campus. The Department is spread
over along the wave front having the facilities of boat landing jetty. The department is
provided with well learned staff members of multidisciplinary nature.

Business Studies have fascinated humans for two reasons, namely generating
interest and augmenting essentials of running a firm effectively. That is why
their study is enchanting and glorifying. The primary objective of this
programme is to provide ample exposure to subjects from the fields of business
legacy and accountancy, equip the Students for entry level jobs in industry and
to contribute to the economic development of the country.
INTERNATIONAL BUSINESS
• Objectives of the Department are to provide:
• Further Enriched Quality Curricula in International Business with New Global
Niches and Nuances through a Mix of Appropriate Pedagogical Avenues.
• A Platform for Multi-skilling with life-skilling components included, to the
Students with a maximum of hands-on, ICT based and media-tinged
opportunities.
• Opportunities for Research on the challenging aspects of global business
relating with the multilateral systems, legal-polico-cultural system, tech-eco-
system & the like.
Corporate secretrayship
The Alagappa University was established in 1985 with four departments. The Department of
Commerce was one among the four departments. In 1995, The Department was named as
Department of International Business and Commerce (IB & C) offered Master of International
Business Administration in addition to M.Com, M.Phil and Ph.D Programmes.
The Department of International Business and Commerce is bifurcated into two Departments –
Department of Commerce and Department of International Business with effect from the
academic year 2016-17.The Department of Commerce offers M.Com, M.Phil and Ph.D
programmes. The M.Com and M.Phil programmes are under Choice Based Credit
System .M.Phil (SSP) is also offered in the Department of Commerce with effective from the
academic year 2016-17. There are seven qualified faculty members (two Professors, one
Associative Professor and four Assistant Professors), wholeheartedly involved and dedicated
for the cause of academic and holistic empowerment of the students and development of the
University. The UGC major Research Projects are undertaken by the faculty members of the
Department. The academic performance of the students is assessed continuously during the
study period by tests, seminars, group discussions, case studies, assignments and other
academic exercises, in addition to end-semester examinations.
