Climate

Action
AIL Project, Group 3
Introduction
Climate action is a real and undeniable threat to our entire civilization. The effects are already visible and will be
disastrous unless we act now. Through education, innovation and adherence to our climate commitments, we can make
the necessary changes to protect the planet. These changes also provide huge opportunities to modernize our
infrastructure which will create new jobs and promote greater prosperity across the globe.

The annual average economic losses from climate-related disasters are in the hundreds of billions of dollars. This is not
to mention the human impact of geo-physical disasters, which are 91 percent climate-related, and which between 1998
and 2017 killed 1.3 million people and left 4.4 billion injured.

In the area of Sustainable Development Goal 13, different Al-based solutions are working to reduce the emissions of
greenhouse gases responsible for global warming, for reducing pollution, for encouraging the adoption of non-
polluting renewable energy sources, etc.
SUSTAINABLE
DEVELOPMENT
GOAL - 13
United Nations General Assembly (UN-GA)
Reasons for slow adoption
(1) Problems with data availability and
accessibility: Data is one of the three
primary domains of Al technologies, and
Al systems cannot function without
adequate data. The problem is that the data
in the world is not free or easily accessible.
To complicate the matter further, the
collection and retention of this data can
raise serious privacy and ethical concerns.
(2) Problems with the availability of talented
manpower: The Al technology is a
relatively new technology. Due to this,
there is the shortage of people capable of
developing, maintaining, and improving Al
capabilities, models, solutions, etc.

ENGLISH

Climate change is a variation or change in the climate (temperature, wind,

precipitation patterns) in a specific location, region, or of the entire planet. This
change in weather patterns persists for a long period of time ranging from decades
to millions of years. It refers to long-term shifts in temperatures and weather
patterns. These shifts may be natural, such as through variations in the solar cycle.

1. The role of technological innovation in addressing societal problems
such as air pollution and water pollution is a more recent development.
2. Unlike innovations in industries such as pharmaceuticals or electronics
—where the result is new products that consumers desire (such as more
effective or lower-cost medicines, cell phones and internet services)—
there is little or no “natural” market for most environmental
technologies whose function is to reduce or eliminate a pollutant
discharge to the environment.
3. Most individuals would not, recognizing that their action alone would
do little to solve the air pollution problem unless all drivers were
required to take the same action.

NOTE
It is still possible, with strong political will, increased investment, and using existing
technology, to limit the increase in global mean temperature to two degrees Celsius
above pre-industrial levels, aiming at 1.5°C, but this requires urgent and ambitious
collective action. One way is Volunteering! Start today, it is never too late!
