Switchgear
What is Switchgear?
switchgear is the combination of electrical disconnect
switches, fuses or circuit breakers used to control,
protect and isolate electrical equipment.
Maintenance of Switchgear
General Inspection

A general inspection is related with :

a) Routine Checking (daily, weekly)

b) Clean Checking
Maintenance of Switchgear
General Inspection

Routine Checking

A routine for check the condition by checking the

temperature, normal condition and others related to
each specific switchgear
Maintenance of Switchgear
General Inspection

Cleanliness Checking

A routine for check the level of cleanliness of

each switchgear for example dust, grease. This
inspection is more to eXternal Switchgear.

Maintenance of Switchgear
Breaker
1. Require inspection and servicing periodically to assure
operability.
2. Servicing should be accomplished based on number of
operations since last serviced, with an elapsed time
limit.
3. The appropriate frequency of servicing depends on
the duty of the circuit breakers.
Maintenance of Switchgear
Insulator Testing
Installation Testing

1. To insure public and personal safety.

2. By performing a high dc voltage test between de-
energized
current-carry(hot), grounded, and grounding
conductors, can eliminate the possibility of having a
life-threatening short circuit or short to ground.
Maintenance Testing

1. To protect and prolong the life of electrical systems and

motors.
2. Over the years, electrical systems are exposed to enviroment
dirt, grease, temperature, stress and vibration. These
conditions can lead to insulation failure, resulting in loss of
production or even fires.
3. Periodic maintainance tests can provide valuable information
about the state of deterioration and will help in predicting
possible failure of the system.
Maintenance of Switchgear
Trip Test

Automatic switchgear (e.g CB) should be tripped using

the protection system to test the complete tripping
circuit. Trip-timing tests are valuable to confirm
satisfactory tripping mechanism performance and as a
condition-monitoring tool.

Also, by reference to the manufacturer’s maintenance

requirements, carry out any additional testing relating to
specific switchgear types.

3.5 KNOW HAND TOOLS AND
PREVENTIVE MAINTENANCE
3.5.1 Explain Electrical Power Tools and Its
Preventive Maintenance
3.5.2 Explain Non-Electrical Power Tools and Its
Preventive Maintenance
Electrical Power Tools and Its
Preventive Maintenance

Power Tools

An power tool is a tool that is actuated by an

additional power source and mechanism other
than the solely manual labor used with hand
tools.
Electrical Power Tools and Its
Preventive Maintenance

Electrical Power Tools

An Electrical power tool is a tool that is used for

electrical purpose , briefly known as power tools
for electrical work such as testing, maintaining
and calibrating.

Internal Preventive Maintenance

• Condition of Internal Circuit (e.g Component)

• Condition of Power Supply ( e.g Fuse)

External Preventive Maintenance

• Condition of Cleanliness (e.g Dust)

• Condition of Protective Material ( e.g Case)

Example of Electrical Power Tools

1) Multimeter
2) Clampmeter

Preventive Maintenance of Electrical Power Tools

Multimeter

A multimeter measures electrical properties such as AC or

DC voltage, current, and resistance. Rather than have
separate meters, a multimeter combines a voltmeter, an
ammeter, and an ohmmeter.
Electrical Power Tools and Its
Preventive Maintenance
 Never touch the probes to a voltage source when a test lead is plugged into
the 10 A or 300 mA input jack.
 Never measure resistance in a circuit when power is applied.
 Always start with the highest voltage or current range.
 Always turn off when not use for save battery.
Clampmeter

A clamp meter (clamp-on

ammeter) is a type of ammeter
which measures electrical
current without the need to
disconnect the wiring through
which the current is flowing.
Electrical Power Tools and Its
Preventive Maintenance
 Never use the Meter on a circuit with voltages higher than specified.
 Never use the Meter on a circuit with frequency higher than specified, the
meter could be damaged.
 Always turn off when not use for save battery.
 Read the manufacturer’s instructions and safety sheet before use and follow
all safety instructions.
 Do not apply more than the rated current or voltage, as marked on the
Meter.
 When servicing the Meter, use only replacement parts recommended by the
manufacturer.
Non-Electrical Power Tools and Its
Preventive Maintenance

Non Electrical Power Tools

A Non-Electrical power tool is a tool that is not

used for electrical purpose , briefly known as
power tools as the complement of electrical
work such as drilling, combining and cutting.
Electrical Power Tools and Its
Preventive Maintenance

Preventive Maintenance of Non-Electrical Power Tools

Internal Preventive Maintenance

• Condition of Motor Induction (e.g Brush, Winding)

• Condition of Power Supply ( e.g Wire Continuity, Fuse)

External Preventive Maintenance

• Condition of Cleanliness (e.g Dust)

• Condition of Protective Material ( e.g Case)
Electrical Power Tools and Its
Preventive Maintenance

Example of Non Electrical Power Tools

1) Electrical Drill
2) Electric Saw
3) Electric Grander
