Literacy
 Defined as the state of being able to read
and write.
 Stems from the word “LITERATE” derived
from the Latin word LITTERATUS,
meaning “(a person) marked with letters”,
“distinguished or identified by letters”
 That such a person was cultured and
educated
 With the ability to read and write
SUB-CATEGORIES of
Conventional Literacy
1. BASIC LITERACY
 The ability to recognize letters and
words.
 Ex. “b-a-s-a” forms the word basa in
Filipino, even without understanding
what it means.

2. COMPREHENSION
LITERACY
 The ability to understand the meaning
of what is being read.
 Ex. the word basa in Filipino, can mean
either “to be wet” or “to read”

3. FUNCTIONAL OR
PRACTICAL LITERACY
 The ability to read written materials needed
to perform everyday vocational task.
 Ex. “And bata ay nagbabasa.” being able
to understand that basa here refers to
reading and not being wet.
Simply knowing how to say
a word is not the same as
being able to understand
what it means.

compute using printed and written materials
associated with varying contexts. Literacy
involves a continuum of learning in enabling
individuals to achieve their goals, to develop
