THE LYMPHATIC
AND
IMMUNE SYSTEMS
Part 1

THE LYMPHATIC
SYSTEM

1.Functions.
2.Structure.
3.Pathology and Diagnostic.
• Food is digested in the small intestine, which is lined with small fingerlike projections

known as villi.
• Absorb fats that cannot be transported by the

bloodstream.

• Dietary fats  the cells of the lacteals.

• The lymphatic vessels then return them to the

venous circulation  throughout the body as

nutrients.
• This fluid delivers nutrients, oxygen, and

hormones to the cells.

• About 90% of this fluid returns to the

bloodstream.
• Lymph (limf) is made up of the remaining 10% of the returning interstitial fluid.

• -itis means inflammation

lymph node or nodes.

abnormal accumulation of lymph fluid within the tissues.

of tumors

and cancer
Tumor
(an-jee-oh-JEN-eh-sis)

Angiogenesis

• Angi/o means vessel

• -genesis means reproduction

 Angiogenesis is the process through which a tumor supports its growth by creating

its own blood supply.

(an-tih-an-jee-oh-JEN-eh-sis)

Antiangiogenesis

• Anti- means against

• angi/o means vessel, and

• -genesis means reproduction

 Antiangiogenesis: is a form of treatment that disrupts the blood supply to the tumor.
Cancer
Carcinoma vs Sarcoma
Breast cancer types and relatives incidence
Ductal carcinoma in situ

• Earliest stage before the

cancer has broken

through the wall of the

milk duct.

• At this stage, the cure

rate is nearly 100%.

Infiltrating ductal carcinoma

• Starts in the milk duct

• Breaks through the wall of that duct

• Invades the fatty breast tissue.

• This form of cancer accounts for

the majority of all breast cancers.

Infiltrating lobular carcinoma

• Starts in the milk glands (lobules)

• Breaks through the wall of the gland

• Invades the fatty tissue of the breast.

Inflammatory breast cancer

• Symptoms:

o Pain

• A rare but aggressive o Increase in the

breast size
• Grows rapidly
o Redness or a rash

o Swelling of nearby

lymph nodes.
