MALDIVES

HISTORY
• The Maldives (Formerly called the Maldives Island) first settled in the 5th
century B.C by Buddhist seafarers from India and Sri Lanka
TRADITIONAL INSTRUMENT
Bodu Beru - The Bodu Beru is a reminder of Maldivians multi-
ethnical influences with strong roots from East Africa
• The traditional costume of Bodu Beru is a sarong and a white shirt. But the
contemporary costumes are more varied and may change depending on
the occasion.
• Additionally, to the drums, there is also a small bell and an onungandu – a
small piece of bamboo with horizontal grooves, from which raspy sounds
are produced by scraping.
FATHIGANDU
JEHUN MUSIC

• Fathigandu Jehun is a popular form


of folk music, in which only men can
participate. It is basically a stage
music show that usually takes place
in the evening time
THAARA FOLK
MUSIC
• Thaara is a popular form of folk music
performed in Maldives. The credit for
its introduction in the Maldives goes
to the Gulf Arabs, who visited this
beautiful island in the mid 17th
century

ZERO DEGREE
• Zero Degree Atoll is a Maldivian band

• Known for locally influenced music
and tunes that bring up the
Maldivian culture and heritage
• Formed in 1987.
CONCLUSION

• Even though Maldives is not a very large country , and have less
traditional instruments , the people and culture and the music is still
very beautiful. A land of music lovers, the Maldives is a rare place for
affections.
