Top Business Schools

in India
Introduction

• Choosing a MBA institute is similar to chossing a bride/groom for marriage. It is

essential you choose the institute which matches your career aspirations and
enhances your future.

• We give a low down of some of the best management institutes in the country.
Some institutes award niche specialization however due to their quality of
education and high student perception they have been included.

• We have kept the list random i.e. no particular order to list the Business schools as
rankings are a very subjective topic (depending on one's choices or perception) and
the last thing we want to do is start a "My Daddy Strongest" kind slugfest.
Top colleges-

Indian Institute of Management (IIM A) - Any course from IIM A PGPM,

PGP-ABM, and PGPX is among the coveted courses in India. The Ahmedabad
placement statistics speak for themselves.
Indian Institute of Management (IIM C)  - One of the oldest IIM’s. IIM
Kolkatta
Calcutta is a preferred institute among recruiters.
Indian Institute of Management (IIM B) – Any institute associated with
IIM BLACKI (a jargon for students securing interview calls from 6 IIM’s) Bengaluru
is definitely worth joining.
Indian Institute of Management (IIM L) – Rated very highly among CAT
aspirants the PGPM and PGPABM courses at IIM L are toughest to Lucknow
secure admission to.
Xavier Labour Research Institute (XLRI) – Among one of the top private
management institutes in India. The BM and PMIR courses are one of Jamshedpur
the best in the country. In terms of placements in Human Resource
Management one can say they outperform the IIM’s.
Indian School of Business (ISB) – A preferred destination for lateral
candidates (with 3 to 5 years of work experience). ISB offers good ROI Hyderabad
compared to AIM and NUS. The one downslide for ISB is the huge batch
size (especially during recessionary times)
Faculty of Management Studies (FMS) – Gives the best ROI in terms of
fee to placement ratio. The entry to FMS is as difficult as IIM’s due to Delhi
limited seats and high number of candidates especially in Northern India.
Indian Institute of Management (IIM I) – Part of the second generation of
IIM’s. Indore competes with Lucknow and Kozhikode to follow up with Indore
ABC
Indian Institute of Management (IIM K - Calicut) – Very Similar to Indore
in terms of placement apart from the lush green campus with scenic Kozhikode
beauty.
Jamnalal Bajaj Institute of Management Studies (JBIMS) – Highly rated
among corporate being one of the oldest business schools (very strong
alumni in prominent positions) however has suffered due to government Mumbai
control (especially the campus). There is a Maharashtra Domicile quota
(Only 18 odd seats for Outside Maharashtra OMS candidates)
S. P. Jain Institute of Management Studies (SPJIMR) – The Mumbai
campus is a well established brand with a host of consulting
companies including TAS being recruiters at the campus. Follows a Mumbai
profiles based model of short listing (CAT/XAT score plays a key role
however is not the only criteria of shortlisting) with group interviews
conducted
Management Development Institute (MDI) – Very few would know
that MDI is government aided institute. Very strong in corporate
training MDI attracts the top recruiters and coveted job profiles. Gurgaon
However the huge batch size does and introduction of multiple
courses have diluted the exclusivity of the institute
Xavier Institute of Management (XIMB) – Apart from IIM C and
upcoming IIM S, XIMB is one of the few notable institutes from North
East India. Heavily supported from Government of Orissa, XIMB PGP Bhubaneswar
course is the second to XLRI in XAT. The PGPRM course is second to
IRMA for rural management for candidates
Symbiosis Institute of Business Management (SIBM) – The older of the
Symbiosis institutes to feature in the list. SIBM has recently shifted from a
small campus in Pune to a lavish campus in Lavale. The Marketing
specialization is sought after due to limited finance seats available in the Pune
institute.  The Bangalore campus is new and would require some time to
reach the status of SIBM Pune. There is a strong internal competition
between SIBM and SCMHRD to be the most prestigious Symbiosis institute
Institute of Management & Technology (IMT) – Backed by Kamal Nath the
current urban development minister of GOI. IMT Ghaziabad is a reputed B-
school with proven placement track record. The institute has suffered in the Ghaziabad
recent years due to introduction of multiple courses and opening of new
centres in Nagpur and Dubai.
Mudra Institute of Communications (MICA) – Located in Shela village of
Ahmedabad. MICA is one of the few communications management institutes
in India. It has notable alumni in advertising and media verticals however the Ahmedaba
institute of late attracts FMCG and manufacturing companies. The steep fee d
compared to placements (Advertising and Media is a low paying vertical) is
one of the drawbacks.
National Institute of Industrial Engineering (NITIE) – Exclusively for
candidates with a background in engineering, NITIE attracts top
companies in the Operations and Supply Chain vertical. The Mumbai
institute offers ample opportunity to students to participate in extra
curricular activities – The reason for the same is well know to past
and present NITIE students
SJSOM Indian Institute of Technology (IITB) – The most coveted
institute in Joint Management Entrance Test (JMET) of IIT’s. Being
Mumbai
restricted to engineers and a small batch size are some of the
drawbacks within the institute
Narsee Monjee Institute of Management (NMIMS) – The institute is a
part of the NMIMS University which offers a gamut of courses. We
are only referring to the full time core MBA course which is among
Mumbai
the best in India. The large batch size combined by multiple courses
and a building for a campus are some of the drawbacks of the
institute.
Indian Institute of Foreign Trade (IIFT) – The institute offers a degree in
International Business however majority of the recruiting companies are similar to Delhi
other business school. It does attract companies in export, trade and logistics
vertical.
Institute of Rural Management (IRMA) – An institute backed by Amul and Gujarat
Cooperative Milk Marketing Federation (GCMMF) – IRMA can be regarded as the
Anand
best institute for rural management in India. Their program is very focus and
intense with rural visits mandatory in their curriculum.
Tata Institute of Social Sciences (TISS) – It awards a MA in Human Resources (HR)
however with a small batch size and a large number of recruiters it is second to XLRI
in candidate preference for HR. The field work to students is a unique aspect of the Mumbai
institute. It is interesting to note that the flagship course of the institute is Masters
in Social Work (MSW)
Symbiosis Centre of Management and Human Resource Development (SCMHRD) –
The name of the institute seems an institute specializing in Human Resources (HR) a
mistake made commonly by aspirants however the institute has grown rapidly in
the past 20 years since its inception. The institute currently shares it campus with Pune
Symbiosis Institute of International Business (SIIB) and Symbiosis Centre of
Information Technology (SCIT)
